I have never understood the rational for a working street officer to have a uniform that required a tie. why?

The NJSP uniform was modeled after the Interwar Reichsheer Uniform. Which evolved into the WWII Uniforms. In addition to its distinctive triangular badge, Troopers wear a distinctive uniform for regular patrol duties, which is normally reserved for "Class A" functions in nearby state police forces (Delaware, New York, and Pennsylvania). Its origins, according to common NJ folklore and Col. Schwarzkopf's diaries, are in German uniforms of the inter-war period which were found to be sufficiently smart and imposing, while practical. The winter uniform consists of a light blue Army-style coat, known as a blouse, with brass buttons, and gold triangular patches, with "N.J." on the right lapel and "S.P." on the left. The blouse is worn over a dress shirt, light blue for sergeants and below, white for lieutenants and above, and a navy blue necktie. Navy blue trousers or riding breeches bearing a gold stripe on each side completes the uniform. During the summer, the blouse is replaced with a long-sleeve blue shirt (NJ State Troopers have not worn short-sleeved shirts since Wednesday, November 1, 2000), while a necktie is still worn. A saucer-shaped hat (as opposed to a Stetson hat in New York and Maryland or the Campaign hat in Delaware and Pennsylvania.) is worn, with two straps—one going over the crown, giving the uniform a distinctive, almost German Army-like appearance, appropriate to the uniform's origin. Unlike most other police agencies, the Troopers' badge is only worn on the hat. For this reason, it is extremely unusual to ever see a Trooper without his cover on. Enlisted troopers wear their applicable rank on the sleeves while officers wear their rank on shoulder epaulets. Both winter and summer uniforms are worn with the full Sam Browne Belt, if a weapon is worn, which was adopted by Col. Uniform During Director Gilliam's administration, World War II was in progress and textile mills were using all green wool for military uniforms. Mr. Gilliam selected the army officers' purple material for the uniform trousers and britches. In 1943, the Patrol's uniform blouse was olive drab whipcord with silver buttons bearing the state seal, a patch on the left shoulder (the orange emblem with the word "Florida" spelled out), silver collar ornament "F.H.P." on the left lapel and the "Winged Wheel" ornament on the right, signifying traffic. A badge, chain, whistle, army pink trousers with a 1-inch (25 mm) black stripe from waist to hem, black riding britches, and one pair of black plain-toed riding boots completed the uniform. Instructions were to wear riding britches and boots on each Friday, Saturday and Sunday until the forest green uniforms were phased out. Also, part of the uniform was the graphite blue Stetson hat, Sam Browne 3" gun belt, plus handcuff and cartridge cases.
Patrol Car Colors The black-and-cream paint scheme is actually camouflage to help the vehicle blend in with the road surface (black) and parched grass medians (cream). The paint adds $657 to the purchase of each vehicle. Prior to sale, the patrol defaces the cars so that they cannot be misconstrued as official law enforcement vehicles. The defaced, two-tone paint deflates each car's resale value by approximately $400.

The purple ties are odd but the NY State Police have professional uniforms and the hats are awesome. I think they might be wool though even year round I'm going to agree with Aimless about the hats. A "State Trooper" has to have a Smokey Bear hat or something similar. ETA: And any state that still mandates mirrors sunglasees wins Texas DPS wear cowboy hats all year; felt hats when it's cold, and straw when it's hot. |

It is divided between Florida Department of Law Enforcement (State version of the FBI), FDLE Capital Police, Florida Highway Patrol, and Florida Motor Carrier Compliance. Also FHP as an Auxiliary force. Their uniforms are the same except for the pants, shirt pocket flaps, patch. The patch says Auxiliary on the bottom and the pants are a dark brown/forest geen (Pre WWII uniform pants).

Had a huge fight at the Consolidated Open Mess at RAF Chicksands. A drunk guy came up to me to try and punch me. He grabbed my tie and pulled on it to get me closer to punch. That'll work! Figured it would. So from what I can tell, in general the tan, olive, or khaki uniforms are more popular down South, and the blues are more popular up North... except I think I saw some Maryland guys in an earthtone up there earlier. |
