Here is video of Mitt Romney on with Jay Leno last night where he discussed Sarah Palin with Leno. Romney called Palin a “qualified, capable person” who is influential “in my party.”

Leno asked Romney as a former Governor if could have ever envisioned himself “quitting” during his term as Governor the way Sarah Palin did. Romney responded that, “No” he could not, because he “loved the job” of being Governor. “But she had her reasons,” he said.

Romney closed his remarks about Palin by saying there is not way he is going to say anything negative about Palin because: “Did you see what she did to the Halibut on her show the other night? I’m not in for that.”

It’s pretty obvious there is very little doubt that Romney is running in 2012.

In his favor - he does have the kind of skill and expertise needed to help get the economy on track.

Against him - he needs to repudiate the universal healthcare in Mass as a failure, and find religion about guns. He made too many anti gun statements, even though he made things better for gun owners in Mass while he was governor.

It does not take any skill or expertise to fix the economy.  What it will take is principle and conviction - two qualities that many in DC lack.

Sarah Palin's got bigger balls than Mitt Romneycare.

ETA:  Here's something Eleua wrote at Tickerforum that I think is very spot on about Palin and her critics.  The context here is Palin's harsh criticism weeks ago about QE2.

Most of you people make me sick. We just wound down another election season on TF and had to endure the usual vaginal grit of "whahhh...whahhh...they are all the same....sob...sob...the bankers rule...bitch...bitch...nobody can lead..." WE got it in 2008 and a bunch of it in 2010.

You know who you are. You are the fucksticks that fancy yourselves as the keyboard commandos with the +2 sigma IQ (the average IQ of an internet posting forum, dontcha know) who can confidently look down at a woman from Wasilla, Alaska and see her as your intellectual mini-me. Oh yeah, how many of you have been mayor of YOUR town? Chief executive of your state with the highest approval rating in the nation? How many of you told the oil companies to FOAD if they don't play your way? Truth is that she has bigger balls than almost all of you and you know it.

Sure, she blew the Couric interview. She has had the guts to admit it publicly. Would you even become interesting enough to be interviewed by the NY media? IF so, would you have the balls to go through with an interview that YOU KNEW WOULD BE OVERTLY HOSTILE without a trial run?

Amuse me with your tales of how you would do so well, and I'll tell you how many Stanley Cups and gold medals I would have won if I had become a hockey player. Bullshit walks. Either you have been interviewed by a hostile NY press or you have not.

We hear the laments over and over again about how "the bankers" are killing us all and the politicians ARE ALL on the take or too stupid to understand what is happening. Suddenly, a candidate that doesn't share your GGG views, and you act all indignant that she beat "your guy" to the punch.

And another thing...you all think you are so fucking smart saying that she has a puppet masters hand up her ass telling her what to parrot, but how many of you form your opinions AFTER reading one of Karl's Tickers?

No matter what, she is on the record and her name is under her opinion hitting this square on the head in such a fashion that you think she is reading Karl's Tickers? Either way, you got what you wanted - a politician with a following three orders of magnitude larger than TF saying exactly what you bemoan over and over that politicians don't say.

I'm sorry she doesn't share your religious and GGG views.

Sure, I blinked purposefully and had to read it twice, but not only is she not afraid to hunt her own food, she is the first politician of national prominence that even has an inkling of having Ben's head (or other anatomical feature) stuffed and mounted on her rocky mantle.

Wake me up when Obama yanks the bankers' sacks three feet down to their knees.

Fuck Romney and fuck the GOP if they run this clown in 2012. Didn't the GOP learn anything since the 2008 election? I can't believe the GOP would support Romney. I thought the lesson learned has been pretty clear; republican/conservative voters want someone MORE conservative than McCain, not less.

Mitt Romney on Gun Control
Former Republican Governor (MA)

I support the work of the NRA, but disagree sometimes
We should check on the backgrounds of people who are trying to purchase guns. We also should keep weapons of unusual lethality from being on the street. And finally, we should go after people who use guns in the commission of crimes or illegally, but we should not interfere with the right of law-abiding citizens to own guns, for their own personal protection or hunting or any other lawful purpose. I support the work of the NRA. I'm a member of the NRA. But do we line up on every issue? No, we don't.
Source: Meet the Press: 2007 "Meet the Candidates" series Dec 16, 2007

Ok to ban lethal weapons that threaten police
Q: Are you still for the Brady Bill?
A: The Brady Bill has changed over time, and, of course, technology has changed over time. I would have supported the original assault weapon ban. I signed an assault weapon ban in Massachusetts governor because it provided for a relaxation of licensing requirements for gun owners in Massachusetts, which was a big plus. And so both the pro-gun and the anti-gun lobby came together with a bill, and I signed that. And if there is determined to be, from time to time, a weapon of such lethality that it poses a grave risk to our law enforcement personnel, that's something I would consider signing. There's nothing of that nature that's being proposed today in Washington. But I would look at weapons that pose extraordinary lethality.

Source: Meet the Press: 2007 "Meet the Candidates" series Dec 16, 2007

Supports Second Amendment rights but also assault weapon ban
Q: As governor you signed into law one of the toughest restrictions on assault weapons in the country.
A: Let's get the record straight. First of all, there's no question that I support 2nd Amendment rights, but I also support an assault weapon ban. Look, I've been governor in a pretty tough state. You've heard of blue states. In the toughest of blue states, I made the toughest decisions and did what was right for America. I have conservative values.

Source: 2007 Republican Debate in South Carolina May 15, 2007

Will support assault weapons bill and Brady Bill
The candidate reiterated his support for an assault weapons ban contained in Congress' crime bill, and the Brady law which imposes a five-day waiting period on handgun purchases. `I don't think (the waiting period) will have a massive effect on crime but I think it will have a positive effect,' Romney said.

I see Romney for what he is and that is a sheep, his record as a yes man bears that out quite clearly. If elected I think he will do what he is told to do by GOP leadership. If we are unfortunate enough to see him elected as POTUS and he acts otherwise then fair enough I'd have a big "I told you so" coming to me. Till then you have to make lemonade with the lemons you are given as a result of the primaries.

IMHO Romney or Palin would be a poor choice but it's the choice that is currently there as far as front runner status goes. I fervently hope another viable candidate rises to the fore and makes this whole conversation a moot point. Darn I hope Haley Barbor runs.

There's a reason Dems haven't touched gun control.  Yeah, they've talked about reinstating the 94 ban, but they got their asses handed to them in Nov. 1994 and they need every vote they can get.

Heller and McDonald are going to throw out any future assault weapons ban.  The AR-15 with 30 round mag, flash hider, and shoulder thing that goes up has been the MOST POPULAR RIFLE in America for years.

Loosen up the tin foil about Romney.  He is certainly presidential material- probably more so than anyone since Reagan.  He is the ONLY one who understands business and how it works and why they hire people.  Romney or Palin- choose your poison.

I'm no Palin hater.  I don't think she is the ditz the mainstream media is making her out to be.  Nor do I feel she is up to the job.  As Obama is not up to the job.

My problem with Palin is I don't think she really stands for what she spouts and I think she is fairly shallow.  I feel the job of Governor of Alaska was pretty much her "Peter principle" peak.  Take it for what it is.

As for job, well I retired at age 40 after working in Silicon Valley designing private voice/data networks for Fortune 500 companies and helping bring a startup company from nothing to over 1000 employees.  I don't recall seeing a clock and if there was one the Feds probably would have prosecuted the company for the hours they made me work.
