I am a huge fan, its a very underated rifle. I only have one anymore, a yugo 59/66 but its a shooter.

very underrated. The SKS is a great firearm, everyone should own one.

From the "What's a good truck gun" thread I thought I was on SKS.com

Cheap, fun, reliable, more accurate than an AK. Old technology, relegated to fun gun. My wife bought mine probably twelve years ago.
I had a Norinco threaded barrel and the trigger sucked so bad that I sold it. I now own a Yugo M59/66 with the launcher, I love blasting tennis balls to over 100yds with them.
SKS on the whole? good gun, billions made and I consider them a "throw away" rifle. I don't see that much historical value in them. |
It's a good viable combat rifle. A bit underfed, bit still...nothing to sneeze at.
I like 'em. Cheap to buy, and cheap to feed. Stripper clips that actually work.
For some reason, I find them more "fun" to shoot than an AK. Not sure why. |
Underrated in my opinion as well. The archaic fixed 10 round magazine for me however, is part of its charm. Now, Im a fan of precision as much as the next guy, but there's something about the SKS for me. I have several, but my camp gun is a sino-soviet I restored. Shes fun to blast with, and if it gets scratched, it gives it more character.I tought my fiance basic sighting on a buckhorned .22 and she transitioned right to the SKS from there. Its her first "real gun" as she called it.
Im surprised at its performance. I carry it on trails near the cabin (VERY isolated) and its my go-to jogging gun. I went for a run during deer season, and happened upon a buck at about 90 of my paces (I never thought to bring this on a hunt, as my primary deer getter) The round (winchester softpoints) did damage on par with a .30-30 or .300 savage internally, and passed clean through. Good little gun, within its limits. |
I'm a fan and love my 54 Tula and Chinese 'paratrooper.' And for the average person it is still a quite viable defensive carbine to this day.

Quoted: Underrated in my opinion as well. The archaic fixed 10 round magazine for me however, is part of its charm. +1. It's tough and efficient. The efficiency is that you can take rounds out of the package and feed them straight into the gun, no having to load hordes of Pmags to prep for the next Y2K. |
Theoretically, it should have satisfied nearly everybody because:
1) it has a wood stock (for all the old-school rifle purists. Think M-14 vs. G3/FAL) 2) It has a .30 cal projectile 3) It has a gas piston! Sadly, it gets overshadowed by the AK. |
Another huge fan of the SKS, they are just damn fun to shoot, accurate, and reliable. What's not to like?

(all # match in new condition and not a refurb) I bought an extra internal mag (chinese 5rd) and use it anywhere you would use a 30/30. (FWC only allows 5rds for hunting here) |
I wish I had an SKS, but, sadly, they are not worth as much to me as they cost now.

I like my coffee table. could I see a pic of your coffee table? |

A lot of gun for under $300. Obsolete for military usage, but for a civilian is still very relevant as a weapon.
Like mine just fine. 59/Chin with a spike. I put a ramline monte carlo stock on it to massively impove the length of pull and grip area. I can consistenly hit an upright 6" steel pipe at 150yds at my local range, that's fine enough by me for what it is and does.
Has anyone added one of those aftermarket rear cover / rearmost-mounted peep style sites to one? IT would really increase hte site radius, ought to help if the mounting is rigid enough. |
I bought two Albanian SKS rifles when they were cheap. Back in the day when the Chicoms were like $79.00 I bought one when I was a poor student and didn't know about corrosive ammo and put it way after a few hundred rounds. Had a lot of rust everywhere.
good rifle...part of me wishes I did not sell it...but if I didn't it probably would have been stolen when my other guns were.
I think the SKS is a victim of being underpriced for so many years and the bubba'd abortions. The SKS at current prices is a very nice rifle.
A WASR is more practical as a tactical weapon but the SKS shines allmost everywhere else. (Built like a brick shit-house, accurate, and looks beautiful - Russians are a work of art) I love em as a woods gun and a plinker. |
Shot my old Norinco this past week on vacation and I miss the little bugger....It now belongs to my boss.
I'd take a SKS over an AK any day. Everything about them makes them a great gun. Their simple, reliable, rugged and the fixed magazine adds to te "less is more" mentality. I had a yugo but all of the "extras" didn't do it for me. I need another one.
I think that i have 13 or so. I havent counted in a while.
I kind of like them. |
I want one as my next rifle.
But at the prices they are, a new Saiga looks better for utility gun, aside from accuracy maybe. Most of them around $350 or so in my area. |
I love SKS's. I had 6 at one time but sold 3 chinese and 1 Yugo.
Now I just have 1 Russian and 1 Chinese paratrooper. |
The SKS is the wallflower in glasses at the dance who will rock your world if asked to get on her feet.
It shoots as well as an AK so get the AK and all its advantages like high capacity detachable magazines.
SKS definitely rates a 'meh' from me. Better than nothing I guess. |
Love my Tula, she was unfired when I got her, $127.00 new. Should have picked up a few of her sisters, too.

My smithsonian condition UNISSUED/AS NEW Blond T series (1983) M59/66A1 is one of my favorite weapons .
I thought they were great when the Chinese para-flavors were ~$100 and cases of 7.62x39 were $75. Excellent first entry for the budget minded, and they're perfectly happy to end up neglected and abused as truck/trunk guns once you upgrade. For the purchase price and cost of operation today, I'm much less enthused about them.

Some people who have never owned, fired or possibly even seen one have been told that they don't like them very much so they don't.
My uncle's gunshop just got a norinco D model in trade. I think that is what they are called, chinese modded to take AK mags.
I missed out on buying them when they were cheap, and now I really want one and can't afford it.
They were great when they were $75 OTD.
I paid $260 for my SKS-M and I'm happy to see how much it has appreciated in value. |
I would love a 1949 Tula Russian (With Spike Bayo & Laminate furniture)
