I cross posted this in GD.
So I was given a grouping of WW1 medals, photos, and documents of the soldier shown. At a later date I will post more details and pics. He was in the Sanitary Corps and also the Hospital Corps in the 71st NYNG and later the Sanitary Det. 106th Inf. in Europe. The green medal is Mexican Border Service (1916), and the Rainbow is WW1 Service. There are devices for the Somme Offensive, Ypres-Lys, and the Defensive Sector. What I would like to find out is if the sword shown is a military sword, a ceremonial Masonic sword, or just some trinket he picked up in Europe. The are NO MARKINGS at all on it. And the tip is not ground sharp. Length of the blade is 19" and the tip looks like it was made blunt from the beginning.

modern era york rite templar swords are similar, but more ornate. they also generally bear a blade inscription.
from the pics i would say not a masonic sword, but to be honest you really can't tell. i have seen lodges use everything from high dollar custom made swords to cheap pakistani crap bought from a flee market. |

Hard to say on the sword. As TBS said, many lodges use plain unmarked swords. My own lodge uses a plain sword without anything on it.

At one time the military had a 'Medical Officers' sword. I don't remember details that might be one of those.

To be honest, it really doesn't look anything like any US military sword I've ever seen. My guess would be an outside manufacture, and one would expect a masonic sword to have, you know, symbols or something.
I hear masons like symbols and stuff...
