I'm a former MM. I won't bash the fraternity in general, but my experience was not a good one. There was a cliquish group headed up by the Secretary and things were ran poorly. I talked with a life long friend that was a MM for many years, worked the chairs and held most (if not all positions) and he suggested going to another Lodge. He even went as far a s offering to drive 30 miles to pick me up to go to his Lodge. But, it was too late for me. I'm thinking about finding a new Lodge and try to Petition again, but I don't know. It started kind of early in my effort to be raised. I got screech-bitched at by one of the clique-bags because I was not wearing my apron during my EA. Meanwhile the clique-bags were in the room with me playing ass-grab games. I toughed it out and went on and almost at each turn it was not a positive experience. On another note, there was a bunch of guys I met that were outstanding men. I should have jumped ship after my MM. Two of my mentors, one vouched for me, were great guys. I feel like I let them down. View Quote i am currently in a very similar situation. i got as far as SW and stepped aside after being elected as WM as the lodge was falling apart due to internal stupidity and i knew full well my election as WM would have only exacerbated that issue and there was no way i could preside over the lodge and promote harmony in the lodge. i will just say the end result has been a VERY bad experience with masonry for me the last year or so. with all of that said, i will not leave masonry. i have spent a lot of in depth time studying what freemasonry is and where it comes from. My issues have been with men who call themselves masons, not Masonry. I am proud to be a Mason and i am proud of the men who have studied and taken their obligations to heart. The issues we have are a direct result of letting in men that should have never been here, and failing to educate those that should be here. i have met some great friends and men through this fraternity and i have been given some incredible opportunities. |

I'm looking into Freemasonry but the lodges nearest me hold meetings on Monday evenings. I travel for work through the week and only spend weekends at home and am unable to attend.

Can anyone explain to me why a belief in a "supreme being" is required? I'm genuinely curious. Is it one of those "you can't be a truly moral person without" or something else?

I personally believe a person can be moral and good natured and be an atheist, but I didn't make up the rules for joining and one of the oaths that I took is to protect the craft from atheists. I make damn sure anyone I talk to about it knows that they must believe. |

View Quote I would contact the local lodge and explain your situation. You might at this time be unable to join, but you might want to participate in other lodge events that might be going on. Some lodges are very active outside of the "lodge", some not so much. You may find that your travels take you to other towns and you may want to attend those lodges, but you have to be a Mason to get in. Perhaps it is something you really want to do and you can spare 3 nights over the course of 3 months or longer, depending on jurisdiction, up to 12 months, for the degrees in your home town. |

View Quote No Athiest can be a mason because no oath would be considered binding amongst masons. Athiests are moral people. Their word is their reputation as a man. However, a Freemason must believe in a supreme being because not only is his mortal worth on the line, so is his eternal worth. |

you take some obligations before god and your brothers in lodge. without a belief in a supreme being there is no "penalty" for renouncing or ignoring your obligations.
there is no requirement for you to be devout, there is no requirement for religion or any particular faith. what and who you believe in is your choice and yours alone. |

View Quote that's a lodge directory. pick out a lodge, go to their website and contact them via email or phone number. you want the secretary of the lodge. Let him know you want to join. You don't have to know anyone. You just need to seek membership. If that fails or if you feel uncomfortable about it, I will get you on the right path. |

I have come to the conclusion that good things take time. |

See that part about recess? You should be contacted and perhaps someone will meet with you, but Lodge business wont happen till September. That means, you have 3 months before they will take action on your petition. Most lodges don't meet in the summer. It gives us the officers a rest and some lodges don't have A/C. |

Non mason here. Both my grandfathers were masons, my father is a current mason as well. I have been interested in the order my whole life, i just never felt stable enough to commit. Now that have grown up and have my own child and family, I see that the fellowship that my ancestors gained from the order was valuble to them. I am looking forward to visiting and learning more about my local orders.
