So....I have a 357 mag revolver and as I was cleaning it.  I thought, this gun would be useless in the ZomPac.  Its slow to reload, the ammo is not as common as it use to be, etc.

Then I started thinking about Rick Grimes Colt Python, I use to think that the gun was a symbol of him and his outdated values...ya pretty cynical.

Don't get me wrong, the gun is badass.  But even Rick will often use a Beretta.  But as I was fingering my heavy, short barreled pistol something occurred to me.  I remember reading that the 357 mag round was created in the 1930's for policemen that complained that the 38 round couldn't pierce car doors and panels.  The round is the same diameter as the 38, just a longer casing to store extra powder.

Then I remembered something from reloading, that several rounds carry the same bullet diameter as the 357 mag.  The 357mag, 38 special, 9mm and even 380 rounds are approx .355 wide.  Sooooo.....I picked up a 380 round (because it was the smallest) and dropped it into the cylinder.  It fell all the way into the front of the cylinder as you would guess.

My guess is that in a pinch, or a Apocalypse with the undead running around, chewing on people, that with a little modification to the casing (wrapping it evenly on all sides, you might be able to fire other rounds thru your 357.

I have never tried, and until the dead rise, I probably wont try it (I love my gun, and I'm to pretty to have guns explode in my face).

As I "researched" the subject on youtube, I watched the guy at Demolition Ranch fire all sorts of rounds through inappropriate firearms.  Many wont cycle the slide, but thats not a problem with a revolver.

Any ideas or thoughts on guns we could feed incorrect ammo thru if our lives depended on it.

To use them, you would need a full moon or 2 half moon clips. Better full moon. If you make some that work for multi ammo, preppers will be all over you.

As for slow reload, as Miculek how that works. Practice is always, always important. I practice 10 minutes everyday reloading with "Gaston" to keep sharp.

Added for emphasis.

Jerry is not human.  I learned more from him in 2 days with a revolver than in the prior 30 years.

Moon clips + Machine of a Man ==> stupid fast reload

I'd prefer to pick up and scrounge enough proper ammo in advance
Any gun that can fire two different calibers is already more useful than a dedicated caliber weapon

Too bad rick always points the muzzle really low like the gun is too heavy for him to hold up lol

With practice a revolver can become faster than most people with autos, you just need to put in some effort.

You can't literally walk around with a rifle and a handgun ALL of the time.
Even in A-stan I didn't have all of my issued weapons on me at all times.
Now if it was a zombie situation I could see keeping stuff close by at hand, but I bet even then complacency would set in for most people if they were not under constant threat and in a locale that was viewed as relatively safe.

As far as fighting to your rifle, unless you're Rick rounding the corner on your horse to find a street full of dead folks or facing the Governor in an active fire fight , a wheelgun with a few reloads would serve just fine.

Ruger makes a .357 Mag/9mm revolver (Blackhawk) which does not require moon clips.

Interesting observation, and a well thought out theory.

But, no...Rick Grimes carries a Python because the people who write The Walking Dead are clueless dip shits.

If a knife to the brain kills a zombie, then a .22LR would be better to have.  Or even in subsonic load to be even more quiet.  not only to reduce your known presence, but to also preserve your own hearing.  The other calibers are for the living.

An over under AR15 and .22LR.  Maybe Red Jackat can monster garage a .22LR that mounts to a flat top so it can be had without SBR stamp.

not sure if joking?

yes, a 357 will fire 38 cal ammo, the case is the same diameter.

An Astra 400 will fire 9mm, .380, 38 super, 9mm largo and few more cartridges.
And yes, it actually does.
Not to mention it is even older than the .357 cartridge...

But the revolver can quite easily be far more versatile than an auto.
Your choice.

.357 Mag is longer to prevent it being chambered in .38spl revolvers.

The .38spl case has plenty of powder capacity (most of which is wasted)

.355 bullets will give poor accuracy in a .357 bbl. In fact, most lead bullets are cast to .358 to better engage the rifling.

Where .357 (and .44) revolvers really shine in the Zombie Apocalypse is in their ability to use cast bullets and BLACK POWDER (which you can make yourself)

If you reload, these obsolete weapons will become your best friends later into TEOTWAWKI.

Agree except I don't consider my S&W 629 to be obsolete

. From primer powered rubber bullets to full power hard cast , the .44 magnum cartridge is extremely versatile.
