The National Rifle Association Wednesday began a new round of TV ads against Democratic Senate candidate Deborah Ross, bringing to $3 million its investment on behalf of Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Burr.

An NRA spokeswoman said the ads began on stations in Charlotte, Greensboro and Wilmington.

In the ad, a narrator says while Ross talks about individual freedom, “as a legislator, Ross voted against personal liberty.”

“Ross voted for gun control,” the ad continues. “Ross opposed your right to self-defense. The press said Ross voted against almost all legislation on firearms.”


Ross, a former state representative from Wake County, voted against many pieces of firearm legislation, according to the voter-education website Project Vote Smart. Among other things she sought to block state legislation that would allow North Carolinians to carry concealed handguns into restaurants and state parks.

The NRA gave Burr an A+ rating. Ross calls herself a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment.

“I also agree with the vast majority of gun owners that we have to take common sense steps to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists, domestic abusers, dangerous criminals and the seriously mentally ill,” she told McClatchy last month.

Ross has called for thorough background checks that would weed out potential terrorists and people with a violent history, according to a campaign press statement. She has attacked Burr for his lack of support for gun-restriction legislation.

In a statement, the Ross campaign called the NRA ad an attempt “to distract from Sen. Burr’s reckless votes against a commonsense, bipartisan measure that would require dangerous criminals, domestic abusers, and the seriously mentally ill to get a background check before buying a gun at a gun show or online.”

“Burr even voted multiple times against preventing suspected terrorists from getting guns.”

Last month Burr told McClatchy that he favors gun-control restrictions that would prevent terrorists from using guns to carry out attacks against U.S. citizens but only if those restrictions do not infringe on the rights of U.S. citizens. He said he supports background checks for gun buyers and believes the country should enhance its background check system.

“If Hillary Clinton is elected to the White House, Deborah Ross will be a rubber stamp for Clinton’s anti-freedom agenda and her anti-gun nominees to the Supreme Court,” said NRA spokeswoman Catherine Mortensen.
