Here’s an interesting endorsement in Buffalo’s
heated three-way Senate race — the Brady Campaign
gun control organization is backing independent candidate Mark Grisanti.

The endorsement looks like a calculated bet that
not all of upstate voters, especially those who
might otherwise vote for Grisanti’s opponent,
Democrat Marc Panepinto, are that upset by the
SAFE Act, despite the numerous anti-SAFE Act
signs that one sees across upstate.

Here’s the endorsement:

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and
its New York Chapters announced today the
endorsement of Sen. Mark Grisanti for re-election
to the New York State Senate. The endorsement
recognizes his leadership and commitment to
sensible gun laws and keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals.

“Senator Grisanti is a champion in the fight to
prevent gun violence in New York,” said Kathleen
Richardson, from the Greater Rochester Chapter of
the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. “As a
staunch supporter of the 2013 New York Safe Act,
Sen. Grisanti has put New Yorkers safety and the
protection of our children from gun violence
ahead of the corporate gun lobby’s agenda. We are
proud to endorse Senator Grisanti for re-election
to the New York State Senate.”

As New York state senator of the 60th district,
Senator Grisanti voted in favor of the 2013 New York Safe Act.

The comprehensive new law significantly strengthened New York State gun laws.

New York received an “A-minus” rating in the 2013
state scorecard released by the Brady Campaign
and the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. Among
other things, the new law requires background
checks on all gun sales to ensure that dangerous people don’t get guns.
