I got my beagle, Hunter, as a birthday present on my 14th birthday. Tomorrow the day before y birthday I will have to say goodbye to my old friend. At twelve years old, he is finally succumbing to old age. It started in the past year, he slowly became more and more lethargic. The past three months he started going to the bathroom in the house. And in the past two months he has been having episodes where he just lays there trembling. Not seizures, but more like he just twitches. In the past month he has become aggressive when you try to make him go outside. He bit my wife and me a few times just trying to get him to go outside. Today he laid in the same spot all day and we had to bring his food and water to him. His quality of life has declined. This decision is one that has weighed on me for quite some time knowing it was inevitable. But still it is sad to know that tomorrow will be the end for my good friend. As stubborn as beagles can be, he has been a true friend in life.

I'm sorry for the loss of your boyhood dog. I know you'll remember him forever, as I do the GCD/Beagle that was mine as a kid. It is a sad state of affairs that our dogs live so short a time, that we don't get to have them forever, except in our hearts.

THE HOUSE DOG'S GRAVE
By Robinson Jeffers

I’ve changed my ways a little; I cannot now
Run with you in the evenings along the shore,
Except in a kind of dream; and you,
If you dream a moment,
You see me there.

So leave awhile the paw-marks on the front door
Where I used to scratch to go out or in,
And you’d soon open; leave on the kitchen floor
The marks of my drinking-pan.
I cannot lie by your fire as I used to do
On the warm stone,
Nor at the foot of your bed; no,
All the nights through I lie alone.
But your kind thought has laid me less than six feet
Outside your window where firelight so often plays,
And where you sit to read—
And I fear often grieving for me—
Every night your lamplight lies on my place.
You, man and woman, live so long, it is hard
To think of you ever dying.
A little dog would get tired, living so long.
I hope that when you are lying
Under the ground like me your lives will appear
As good and joyful as mine. No, dears, that’s too much hope:
You are not so well cared for as I have been.
And never have known the passionate undivided
Fidelities that I knew.
Your minds are perhaps too active, too many-sided...
But to me you were true.

You were never masters, but friends. I was your friend.
I loved you well, and was loved. Deep love endures
To the end and far past the end. If this is my end,
I am not lonely. I am not afraid. I am still yours.

He was happy today. Last night he got a three course dinner of filet mignon w/ rice and chicken club sandwhich and some snapper. This morning he got a big helping of tuna and eggs with a side of pizza. The wife and kids took him to the water so he could take one last dip. He was so excited when we arrived at the vet and was never worried. He was strong up to the end. I know he is in a better place now and won't have to suffer any longer.

Eventually you will reach a point where when you think of Hunter you will think of all the great memories.

It will take a while, but I hope you reach that point soon.
