I am just a hack but want to get something different.  I have the Classic Fender Jazz 4 string and an old Hamer 5 string Cruise, but have been looking at getting something different in a 4 string.  I am looking at a Spector Legend 4 but can't decide on the standard (P-J pickups) or the classic with soap box humbuckers.

Any words of advice would be appreciated.  I am leaning toward the classic as the electronics seem to be a bit better.

Thx

I'm not a bass player.  I own about 10 of his 6 string guitars and think he is the best luthier on the planet now.  I admit this is the only bass I've seen on his webpage so it might be a one off and he isn't a bass specialist.  But if you go on the gear page he is highly thought of and I think you'd have a great bass from him,

That is beautiful!

I have my eye on a wonderful Sadosky, but $3000 is a bit steep for a hack like me.

What kind of budget are we looking at here?

I'm a resident G&L fan-boy, and that Spector's $750 price is right on top of the G&L M-2000 or L-2000 Tribute basses.  They're outstanding - nice feel, great assembly quality, and pickups that are pretty well unparalleled in their versatility.  I'm a bigger fan of the L with the series/parallel and active EQ switching, myself...

The Ibanez SR500s are amazing. They don't sound like a normal bass  (more bell like, natural harmonics galore, awesome overtones) and they are very reasonable in price.

If you are looking for something different in a bass, I suggest looking at the pickups first.  You have two basses that are single coil jazz pickups.  So look for something different tonewise like:

1. Rickenbacker 4003
2. A EBMM Stingray or a Fender American Dimension bass.
3. Fender pbass or a competent fascimile like G&L, Lakland, etc.

Or go the custom route.  What interests me is a custom pbass with standard pbass pickups, and a older pbass or tele single coil, switchable.

I have been looking at Lakland also.  A 44-02 or 44-01 with a black body and maple fretboard would be perfect.  Nobody has one is stock anyplace though.
