I'm not a bass player. I own about 10 of his 6 string guitars and think he is the best luthier on the planet now. I admit this is the only bass I've seen on his webpage so it might be a one off and he isn't a bass specialist. But if you go on the gear page he is highly thought of and I think you'd have a great bass from him,

What kind of budget are we looking at here?
I'm a resident G&L fan-boy, and that Spector's $750 price is right on top of the G&L M-2000 or L-2000 Tribute basses. They're outstanding - nice feel, great assembly quality, and pickups that are pretty well unparalleled in their versatility. The Ibanez SR500s are amazing. They don't sound like a normal bass (more bell like, natural harmonics galore, awesome overtones) and they are very reasonable in price.

A 44-02 or 44-01 with a black body and maple fretboard would be perfect. Nobody has one is stock anyplace though.
