UAE orders Su-35S and enters talks with Russia on 5th Gen Lightweight Aircraft

Russia has plans to develop a fifth-generation light combat aircraft with the UAE, according to Sergey Chemezov, chief executive of Rostec, Russia’s largest military industrial complex.

Speaking at IDEX this week, Chemezov said an agreement had been signed and that work could begin soon. The project is reportedly to be based on an advanced version of the MiG-29. Chemezov also reported that the UAE was in a separate discussion with Rostec regarding the supply of Sukhoi Su-35 fighters.

Russia is making considerable efforts to grow its defence business in the Middle East region. On Monday, the UAE and the Russian Federation signed an agreement at the IDEX show covering co-operation in defence industries.

The agreement was signed in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and Denis Manturov, Russian Minister of Trade and Industry. Manturov commented: “One of the fields of this co-operation is the creation, development and supply of the fifth-generation fighter jet.”

Another deal has been struck between the Russian Direct Investment Fund and Middle East investors to create a consortium to buy a minority stake in Russian Helicopters, which is part of the Rostec conglomerate.

Russia-UAE Cooperation and Military Aircraft Development

The United Arab Emirates has agreed to purchase a batch of advanced Sukhoi Su-35 Flanker-E fighters from Russia. The two countries also recently signed an agreement to co-develop a new fifth-generation fighter.

The Flanker-E is said to be the most capable operational Russian combat aircraft which would add to the UAE’s already formidable fleet of Lockheed Martin F-16E/F Block 60 Fighting Falcons.

“We signed an agreement of intent for the purchase of the Su-35,” Rostec chief Sergei Chemezov told the Moscow-based TASS news agency.

We don't sell the code to our EW systems, but left them with open code so they could program their own regional threat profiles in the F-16E/F Block 60 Desert Falcon, which is a Gen 4+ aircraft in almost every category.

We originally weren't going to sell them one of the missile systems, but then changed that recently.

They might be playing both sides.

UAE is a huge hub of US activity, so one can use their imagination.

The US denied the UAE from purchasing the F-35 for some reason:

The US’ reluctance to include UAE in the F-35 eco-system, may be pushing the gulf nation towards Russia for the co-development of a next-generation fighter aircraft.
Russia and the United Arab Emirates will get down to joint work on a future light 5th generation jet on the basis of MiG-29 as of 2018, Chief of the Rostec corporation, Sergey Chemezov was quoted as saying by Tass late last month.
"We believe we shall start working on this plane as of next year. It will take seven to eight years to develop," Chemezov said on the sidelines of the international weapons show IDEX-2017.
"A future fifth generation plane will be created on the basis of Russia’s Mig-29," he had said.
The memorandum of understanding between Russia and the UAE to jointly develop the fighter aircraft follows a similar fighter jet collaboration deal agreed between Russia and India last year.
UAE currently uses the advanced version of the F-16 fighter jet, and the U.S. military has F-22 Raptors stationed there. But despite the UAE's interest in the American-made F-35, the U.S. has declined to make it available — which forced the Arab nation to approach Russia about its jet, Fox News reported Thursday.
“The aircraft’s development is at the initial stage. The co-development of the fifth-generation light fighter together with the UAE is at the initial stage. At present, we are preparing our proposals for the Emirates. We believe the aircraft will be a success.
Inability to Acquire F-35 pushing UAE to Russia?

With the games with Qatar, it`s probably prudent we restrict some of weapons sales to Gulf area nations.
