I'd like to know more about him as a pilot. Was this an unfortunate event or was he in too much airplane for himself? Googling about him sucks because all the links are about the plane crash. All that I could find is that he flew a P51 with the Horsemen and I would assume that for him to fly those sorts of aircraft for years and to be as intelligent as he was that he would of had to have been a competent airman.

I think he flew *in* a P-51.   I didn't see anywhere that he flew the P-51 himself.   Could be mistaken.

The FAA airman cert database shows him with a private ticket only.   No instrument rating.
