You should honestly be proud of the series you've shown. Most folks can't appreciate how hard it to properly capture prop airplanes doing what they're supposed to "do"...flying. Got any more? Good stuff.

Thanks - I think?

Thanks!  It's a challenge, but fun since I enjoy being around mil aviation and the old warbirds.  This is the best I've been able to do so far - it seems like I have small incremental improvements each airshow.  Still learning, still working on technique, still need to get better in post processing.  Joined the Dallas Area Aviation Photographers meetup group and will
be looking for events where I can get with them to get some more practice and pick up some
pointers.

No more images right now, that's it for this show.  Hoping to get to either Cannon AFB or Kirtland AFB for their shows next month, then the Heart of Texas show at Waco in September, and hopefully Nellis in November.

Sounds like lots of opportunity to practice. You've got the right attitude and you're doing great already! Can't wait to see where you end up.

Time for me to step it up and take a swing at post processing!

I do need to mention, that this thread is a big motivator for me - there are some beautiful photos posted in here.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Well, I went over to the local museum today to take a picture for another thread and I was hoping to catch the P-51 coming home from an airshow in NJ. Looks like I missed the P-51 coming home by about an hour, so no action shots today. We'll just have to wait until next weekend and the airshow over there. Hopefully the weather holds.

Haven't processed anything yet, but I signed up for PS today, so I'll be starting to mess around in that from now on

Just played around with these to make them a little better. Still have a LOT to learn. And to think I was just dicking around with my shitty lens today.

I'm with you.  I just love to shoot pictures and learn as I go.

Nice set of the cockpit station, and it's kinda cramped in there.  Yeah - the TD system and synchrophaser automated some of the constant attention and adjustment of the recips.

Awesome plane.  And unbelievably quiet.  It is hard to believe how quiet the turbo superchargers make the P-38.

What I would do to sit in that.

Just the other day I purchased a large piece of a D-9 recovered in Russia along with a data plate from another. Pretty excited.

That 109 low pass picture looks pretty damn close to you-know-who's picture everyone has been sharing on facebook. Still debating on when to head over today. Rain has stopped hear for the moment, but I'm not in a rush. If they fly today it will be late.

Thanks, those three were among my favorites as well. I rented a different body for the weekend and I like the results! Flight ops cancelled today for weather, but I got some grounds shots. Once I can Shanghai the computer from the wife I'll post a few.

Assuming the weather continues to clear we should get some more action tomorrow.

I have spent a lot of hours working on that bird.  I almost got to fly down there but one of the other volunteers was able to work out a conflict he had.  She is a great airplane and has some serious street cred she has been there and done that.

I flew to another event with some of the other museum volunteers.

I'm sorting through pictures right now and I'm pretty sure I got a shot or two of her taking off this afternoon. I must say, those were the smoothest running radials I've ever heard! The care you guys have put into her is very apparent! Bravo Zulu.

Sunday was overcast and had intermittent drizzle. Rain was dancing all around us, but they still managed to get most of the show in.

Hard to believe this is what she looked like inside when the museum got her (before my time).

What is the difference between these two pictures?

Has to do with a project we did not this winter but last.

This one from back in the day before she was painted W7 may help.  There are actually 2 things.

Obviously the tail letters have changed. Something about the aft door?
Link Posted: 5/23/2016 1:11:57 PM EDT
[#42]
Good catch on the tail letter.  The tail cone is different form the old photo as well.  Also fairings where the wings attach to the fuselage are modified.  Lots of things get changed in 70+ years.

I was referring to the windows. We replaced the front little window that was covered up and we removed the back window.  The C47 should only have 6 windows on the left side.  They added the extra for passenger purposes.  That winter we also recovered the elevators. The window was not a small project as we had to fabricate some parts that had been cut out to allow for the window.  I learned how to buck rivets that winter.

There are plans to do a fund raising campaign this year to help with some other maintenance.  We have a great group of volunteers but our funding is pretty limited.   Our airshow doesn't generate as much as one would think.  We now have the Movie Memphis Belle back under lease it has already generated a lot of interest but is also going to really increase the work load.

I get why people love B17s I really do they are great airplanes.  The one we will be flying of course has military history but mostly military transport stuff.    But I have sat alone in our C47 and thought about what went through the minds of "our boys" sitting in the exact same spot when they were making that trip across the channel if your not dead you can't help but be moved by the enormity of it. The history is the best part well that and she is flying!

I took this on a trip to an event a couple years back.  One of my favorites.

Per our director of maintenance:

Ed and Raubie Hopkins were volunteers who were involved for many years.  When Ed passed in 2009 we painted both spinners red (his favorite color) in his memory.  A couple years later when Raubie passed we painted one blue (her favorite color) so they could continue to be together with the airplane they both supported for many years.
