I spent yesterday and today playing tour guide for out-of-town visitors.  We stopped by the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum Annex yesterday (Dulles Airport) and today at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.  Included are some shots from each taken with a simple point and shoot – museum lighting – arghhhhh!  I have more if there's interest.

Air and Space:

Great pics.

I've driven by the National Museum of the Marine Corps countless times...never had the spare time to look inside. Perhaps in the next month or two.

If you have a chance, I'd recommend a Saturday (even though traffic is horrific on I95).  They have former Marines who talk to the exhibits, and in many cases, who were part of the battles.  Yesterday there was a gentleman who was a battle of Iwo Jima survivor who was at the LVT exhibit and discussing his perspectives.

As with many museums, the aviation exhibits are cramped and overhead so hard to get a great shot.  At the NMMC most of the aircraft are above the period exhibits.

Updates - sorry for the composition, I didn't realize I was cutting off so many front and backs of aircraft:

From what I've heard the crew didn't put the plugs in before landing on the water. The two ex-SEALs that were doing the stunt coordinating work went over the side to put the plugs in. That let them stay afloat long enough to ground her. After a couple days on the beach, they pumped her out and floated her out to a barge. For some unknown reason they slung her under the fuselage fore and aft of the wing. When they lifted her out of the water, she broke right where the straps were. Apparently someone didn't do their homework and realize that Catalinas have a hard mount for a single point lift designed into the aircraft between the engine nacelles.

Wow...guess its completely unsalvageable now?  The movie sounds like it could be good (other than Cage).

I don't have any fresh pictures, but the Military Aviation Museum's Mosquito, KA114, won grand champion at Oshkosh over the weekend

I'll be heading back out the museum in a few weeks. My brother wants to come down from Alexandria to see her. It'll be my 3yo nephew's first time getting right up next to the old planes.

One of the nice things about living about 1.5 miles from our local municipal field is that we regularly get small traffic over our house, and from time to time some more interesting stuff like C-130's and Blackhawks doing practice drops with the local NG units.  These guys were dropping in January when it was about 10deg F outside.  Guessing the blast from the slip stream was cold!

Being in the country means we routinely get our own airshows from this guy doing crop dusting.   Last week he was in front of our house and was so much fun to watch.  Big radial growling as he nosed in and sprayed, then going almost quiet as he climped out at about 45deg, hit hard left rudder to turn hard over, then throttled up to do another pass.  Didn't get the camera out in time tot get any pictures.

I did catch him spraying a field behind our house this weekend.  What was great is he was below tree-top level, so couldn't see him, but could hear that loud radial coming toward me.  He'd pop up over the trees, bank hard and rudder over and go back the other way.  I tried to catch a cool shot of him below roof top and tree top level.  Mind you I live up on a hill, but this was really fund to watch.   Has to be a lot of fun to fly.
