Wow! Don't feel guilty. No one gets out of this life alive. Had some Northwoods in a Vinland and talked to my best friend on the phone for way too long and loud according to my wife. I miss seeing my friends. Now on an H Upmann listening to some Led Zeppelin. Can't wait for my $5 pipes to show up to finish for my son in law and my friend.

Just finished a 7 pipe restoration project for the wife of a friend and now I’m having a bowl of Boone’s Pride in another Peterson. Gotta have something to do since the world lost its fucking mind! |

I liked it enough to get another tin. Kinda like a Father Dempsey or Boswell Northwoods. Northwoods is my favorite out of those three. Going to crack a tin of Quiet Nights for the first time tonight. Looking forward to it.

I blend it all together and separate it into 2 oz portions. The portions are then put into the “press” I made. The press is a 10” piece of 2” PVC pipe and five 2” circle dividers I cut out of a nylon cutting board. I start with a nylon disk then tamp in 2 oz of tobacco, then a disk and then another 2 oz of tobacco and so forth. When the press is full I put it in the C clamp and torque it down as tight as I can get it. I leave it in the press for five days, checking it a couple of times a day, retightening it each time, usually a half turn or so. At the end of five days I drive the plugs of tobacco and disks out of the tube. At this point it’s a plug tobacco about 1” thick and 2” in diameter. It is perfectly smokable at this point, you would just shave it off and crumble it to smoke it. I like to take it one step further. I put the plug in a 1/4 pint wide mouth jelly jar and set on the lid and loosely tighten on the ring. Then I place the jar of tobacco in a 200 degree oven for one hour. At the end of the hour I remove them and tighten down the rings as tight as I can get them. The lids will seal as the jars cool. The plug expands from the heat and becomes a crumble cake. You can then just scrape enough tobacco off the top to fill your pipe. All of this does a couple of things, the pressing melds the juices and flavors of all of the tobaccos in the blend and the oven proofing mellows the smoke. It makes a very smooth flavorful tobacco. I’ve giving samples to all of my pipe smoking friends and everyone has enjoyed it. Here is my current batch in the press. Here is a jar of the last batch opened up. This is 2 ounces of tobacco in a jar that will normally only hold an ounce. I want to try some more blends, but I can only do 8 ounces at a time and I’ve got several people wanting a jar of this, plus I need enough for myself. ETA, I also plan to “blend” some tinned tobaccos I’ve purchased that I feel are either too harsh or smoke too hot. I think if they were blended with some Black Cav and pressed and stoved it would mellow them out. I may also take some varieties I think are too bland and blend them with some Latakia and press and stove them. ETA 2, I call this blend “Light Brigade” as I like to think of it as a Light English Cav. |
