I'm finishing out my shop and have it studded out. Next step is to put corrugated steel ran vertically on.

I don't want to run wood horizontal furring because it will bump the steel out too far

I'm thinking metal strapping would do the trick.

Just run horizontally and nail to studs so metal screws can attach steel to it.

Anyone have a better idea?

Even 7/8" hat channel will likely be too wide

Are you talking like a pole barn style build?  How does the cross pieces make steel stick out too far?  Do you mean from the posts?  Your post doesn't make a ton of sense to grasp what your really referring to.

I used 7/16 OSB. I thought about stripping some drywall but too much work. Strapping might work but it will flex when pressed, may be no big deal.
