Almost done with my 'Murica themed concealable coffee table.  Compartments have magnetic locks.  Coming together better than I thought.

I'm impressed.

Original idea, or from plans or something you saw somewhere?

Totally not my idea.  Stole the idea from different sites and came up with something similar.

Doesn't lessen the workmanship, though!

Op, you need to turn this into a build thread. I hope you took pics along the way. Now, lets have it.

Thanks for all the comments.  I really didn't take pics or anything because I didn't know how it was going to come out.  I'm Actually going to do some mods/improvements to the original design.  I'll be sure to take step by step pics along with measurements, etc and post them.  Thanks again!

Very nice!  I've been wanting to do something like this for a long time now. What are the time requirements do you estimate?

I completed the project in about a week (had other duties to tend to as well...i.e., work, "honey-do's, etc).  I'm sure you could knock it out in a day or two.  I have a shop so it didn't take long to prep the wood.  Most time consuming was doing the cut-outs on the closed cell foam.

I'll take some more pics of the finished project, legs, sides?

Nice piece of furniture.

Did you have a specific template for the stars?  I just built a wooden 3x5 this weekend but I haven't done the stars yet because I don't want to screw them up...

LOL.  Actually, my wife cut out a template on her Cricut machine using material with an adhesive backing to prevent over-spray and any running.  I'd have to ask her how she set that up, but I'll let you know.

This is some of the hardware I used for the table top:

Rev-A-Shelf - RAL-101-1 - Rev-A-Lock Cabinet Security System

Liberty H01068C-UC-C5 Non-Mortise Concealed Spring Hinge, 1-Pack

Fastcap Kaizen Foam 57mm (2-1/4") Black

I'm changing out the Lid Support to something more sturdier than the chain link.  I just got these hydraulic supports in:

Apexstone 100N/22.5lb Gas Struts,Gas Springs,Gas Strut,Lift Support,Gas Shocks,Lid Stay,Lid Support,Set of 4

How "stable" are the non-mortised hinges? Much side-to-side play? I installed a set of Lowes brand on a bath cabinet and there is all sorts of in-out, up-down play in them. Drives the wife nuts and may have to switch to mortised.

Thanks,

Kickass.

Do you prefer to grab your weapons from an upside-down position or do you envision reaching over the top of the lid?

The lid is low enough to reach down and grab what I need.  Or I can access from the side.

Not much play at all, but still there.  If I make another one, I'm definitely going with mortised hinges (just more stable).
