I have a coax line in my study.  How do I determine if it is "hot" without lugging a TV in there and hooking it up?

If you have a connector fitting and a roll of coax (and who doesn't have a roll of coax laying around?), run it to where your tv is.  Signal loss would be high, but you should be able to tell if it is live, anyway.

Alternatively, if you have cable internet, it might be quicker to move your cable modem to the line in question, as there will be status lights on the front to tell you if it is connecting.  It is also a bit lighter than even a new LCD TV...

Just what I'm looking for!

I hooked up a TV to the cable and it said that there was with no signal or a weak one. I'll,give this gizmo a try and then get the Charter tech out to see what we can do

Thanks all

I have a line tester similar to this:

It's great for seeing where your line comes out, especially if there is a hub or multi-connection point.

Saving him and anyone who reads this thread and would have bought that thing $12.  What's yours?

Really? Thats funny, because it helped me trouble shoot a bad coax line in my house that I tried using a cable box on, but it wasnt receiving strong enough signal, and the tool showed it. I replaced the line and now it works. But I guess it wont help...
