I have a what looks to be Kohler lift and turn drain in my tub. It was here when I bought the house and it's failing. How in the flying fark do I get it out? I'm told it should be one of three ways to remove it.

1. Un-screw the top and there should be a screw. Well there's no screw:

2. A screw underneath the part that lifts up. Nothing there...

3. A cotter pin under the part that lifts up. Nothing there.

So other than hitting it a few times with a 10LB sledgehammer, how do I remove it?

Amateur plumber here-

Is there a slot in that all-thread down there?

Could be you just need the right size screw driver to un-screw it.

The angle of your photo makes it hard to see, but it looks like there's a slot on the right side.

Nothing there. I got in there with a LED flashlight and a screwdriver.

The 'plug' unscrews from the center shaft.

The problem is usually holding the center still while turning the plug.

Usually you have to remove the entire mechanism from the drain.

You start at the pop up control to release the mechanism that moves the plug up and down.

Getting it back in is left as an exercise for the reader.

Hint":string and a nut for weight or a piece of fish tape.

Plumbing LOVES to hide fasteners.

Can't do that until I figure how to remove the central piece.

Looked at everything underneath. There is literally nothing there.

The mechanism is in the overflow line from the tub down to the trap.
Inside the pipe.

Is their a screw on the overflow plate with whatever operates the pop-up?

Some of the older spring operated ones require you to remove the drain line from the tub to gain access.

It's not a trip lever, it's a lift and turn drain. No mechanism in the overflow.

OP-Lift up on the pop up, but only about halfway through its range of motion, and then unscrew it.

Tried both ways. No luck.
Is it just rotating with no resistance or will it turn at all?

Rotating with very slight resistance.

After a few hours of messing with it, I got tired and jammed a screwdriver in the drain hoping I could get the whole thing out. I had slight movement and with the pop top jammed up at an angle I was able to get it out.

There was a minor amount of something down there when I pulled it out and at the end of said junk was a small screw, but no screw holes.

i just pulled a fistful of hair out of the kids tub with the same style watco popup

if you grasp the main disk with needle nose pliers

you can tighten the center knob with enough force

so that when you lift the stopper half way, you can unthread the mechanism from the drain

I had did that, but it still wouldn't come off, until I shoved a screwdriver in the drain and knocked something loose to get mine off.
