The absence of passion when either seeing or thinking of things is the absence of egotism. The dispassionate person no longer sees and thinks of things through the prism of passion which wants to be satisfied by them; in reference to himself, things no longer seem to be gravitating around him, but they appear as having their own purpose independent of his egotism. Other people appear to him as human beings who are purposes in themselves, who need help from him. -fr.Dumitru Staniloae, Orthodox Spirituality.

For myself, the absence of passion is indifference.

What kind of "passion" is he speaking of? Sexual?

As, humans God requires passion in us to further His Church. The Holy Spirit infused the Apostles with passion to fight, with their lives, for God.

Sexual passion is good for relationships with your spouse.

Maybe I am reading wrong.

No, I don't believe so.  It's indifference either way.

So self control, not passion,  is the problem.

No, separation from God is the problem.

I can't think of any problem out there that does not trace back to our separation from God. The quote from frStaniloae above just stabs at a snippet of the problem.

Separation from God =sin

So you are saying that passion is separation. So passion is sin?

Or lack of self control over your passion leads to sin?

I'm going with the later.
