Congrats on the build, very impressed with your commitment to the car, and love the work you have done.
Played with a few RB's back in my youth, I think your idea of an 850 DP is the way to go. With the combo you have a Vac. secondary carb would take a few hours with a gauge and vacuum spring kit from Holley to get the secondaries moving when you want them to. Playing with the squirters and the pump cams on the DP is going to be easier...and lets face it a DP just looks right on a 440.
As we all know these projects are never done, and EFI might be something to look at down the road if you really feel the need. In most of Az the odds are cold starts are not going to be an issue.
I am an old guy tho. just my opinion.
The first RB I ever played with came out of a a Road Runner that had a 80 ft. Doug Fir come down long ways and flatten the car. Now, understand this was 1975 and we were 17 yr. old kids...and we had a '65 Mustang...with a 6 banger.
We chopped the shock towers out, plated over them, slid a Econoline straight axle under the front, and slid the freshened and now 12 to 1 383 in the hole with a 4speed behind it. Gear Drive, Tunnel Ram, twin Carter 500's, 9 inch rear, 4.56 Detroit Locker,
Good times were had....40 years ago.
We found the Mustang right here in town, in a backyard, a couple of years ago.
A roller was all that was left.
It is now back in my best friends garage, and we are finding parts.
I bought him a gear drive for Christmas, and we found a tunnel ram for a 440 at a swap meet. Two grandfathers playing like they were kids again

I have the motor primed in SPI epoxy. It will be final coated in ss urethane hemi orange. I wanted to keep it somewhat factory looking so all aluminum parts are getting painted.

1. What stall are you putting in?
2. Those valve covers look tall.
3. Looks good, but how are those headers going to fit the drivers side - is the steering shaft going between the tubes?

1. PTC 3200 stall. It will cruse and drive normal though but when I hit wot it will flash to 3200.
2. Yes, they are. Made for the Stealth heads and are tall to allow aftermarket high lift rockers.
3. They fit normally, the steering shaft does not go between the tubes like an A body would.

Great thread! I love restorations, I love Mopars, and I love Mopar restorations . Seriously awesome work so far.

Obligatory Mopar pics, my dad bought this charger new in 1972. Unfortunately it was long gone before I was born.

Thanks. I will need to drill the valve covers for breathers. And lots of little parts to collect.

I should be dropping the motor into the engine bay in the next few days so I have prepping to get it installed. Headers are wrapped and tied out of the way. Radiator is out. Small parts are on the motor.

Thanks and consider it done.

Progress can continue. Received my 9.5" torque converter today. The 4 converter to flexplate bolts are not symmetric so it is a good idea to line it up before hand and mark prior to install. Then fill the converter with atf fluid before dropping it in the transmission.

How do you like the SPI paints? I'm in the process of building a 70 Nova and thinking of their black epoxy primer for chassis/underhood.

Gorgeous build by the way.

Thank you!

I have painted two cars with SPI epoxy and think it is an awesome product with great customer service.  It is pretty durable stuff and easy to shoot as well.  It mixes 1:1 and can be re-coated without scuffing for 7 days and it sands really really well after a few days.  It also works as a sealer when reduced. You won't be sorry.  I really want to try one of their single stage paints!

I'm going to order my driveshaft today which needs to go in before putting the exhaust on.

Yesterday I worked on running my transmission lines. I bent everything from 5/16" tube and I am waiting on a few flare connectors to finish the return line.

I put in 6.5 qts of break-in oil and primed the motor. For RB Mopars, oil pump spins ccw. The motor needs to be rotated while the pump is spun because the top end gets oil through the cam journal galleys. I am getting nice oil up top and no random leaks.

I also cleaned up the neutral safety wiring which was about 2 feet too long. While I was down there I clearanced the driver side header where it was super close to the torsion bar.

There is a nice steel range set up out there!

Hooked up my kickdown cable. It is made by Bouchillon and is pretty slick, replaces the mousetrap rod kickdown rods. My carb is still on backorder. The placement of the kickdown cable was moved after these pictures to the inside so it is more in line with the throttle cable. It will need some adjustments.

Admittedly, I know very little about MOPARs, no dust shield attached to the back of the block? I know on Fords it provides correct spacing for the starter to ring gear.

On small block Mopar's there is a thin, steel dust cover that goes on behind the starter.  It does not have a bearing on the starter depth.  On big block Mopar's there is a small dustshield that fits on the bottom of the trans and covers from the oil pan rail down.  Mopar starters have a nose that fits in a pocket inside the transmission.

I can start fitting my exhaust. I received my Jegs B Body 2 1/2" exhaust kit, Dynomax Ultra-Flo mufflers and ball flanges to make disassembly easier. This kit, despite being for the correct body, still needs modifications to work. Angles need to be adjusted and length modified to fit tight to the pans.

I got my carb installed and need to run 3/8 dual feed lines to get it ready to run.  I should be getting my aluminum driveshaft today so that will be going in tomorrow. And I am tracking down some electrical gremlins which may involve the ignition switch so start up may be delayed.

Are you running an AFB style carb because it's similar to stock or you prefer it over a Holley?

It is an AVS model. I like the 1405 Eddy I have on my 62 and is stupid simple to set up out of the box. And for a street car the VS and simplicity is great. It runs on a max 6.5lb of fuel pressure so it works well with the factory style pump.

For full performance I'm sure the Holley is more tunable and probably better after it is set up. I love the look of the Holley, but the two Holleys I have ever used (DP and VS) required a lot of tinkering and they never were right.
