After years of flip-flopping between the CRF250L and WR250R, I joined the club today and picked up a 2017 CRF250L. The WR is no doubt a better bike (better suspension and more power), but my intended uses are only putting around town and some back roads. So the almost $2K price difference wasn't worth it to me.
The dealer tried getting me to buy one of the 2016 models on the floor, but I was set on the 2017. I like the new graphics and it has 2 more HP than previous years. So I had them order me one and I had to wait a couple weeks. Picked it up today. Had 0 miles on it. Only had time to put 10 miles on it this morning, but damn it's fun. It's my first motorcycle. Took the MSF Course about a month ago and got my M license. Attached File |

Got the DRC Edge 2 tail light with integrated turn signals (12oclock Labs board) hooked up just now. Looks so much cleaner, and the factory tail light felt like 10lbs, compared to the very light DRC.

So the boy had his Loretta Lynns Regional this past weekend. We had a blast! If it wasn't for bad luck, he would have had no luck, but he still came out smiling and knew he put in hard work.
Moto 1 - He had the 25th gate pick out of 34. He lined up up out side of the dog house. I told him to pin it cut across everyone and get to the inside of turn one. He did just that. 3rd in the first corner. Threw the rollers and over the 1st wall jump. At the 2nd corner he pushes to hard and lays it down. He went from 3rd to 34th. Picks the bike up gets back up to about 15th. Come over the 2nd wall jump and runs into a kid's bike that had went down and get's his front tyre stuck between the downed bikes rear tyre and rear fender on the down slope. He was pulling with all his might but was stuck until an official got over to him. He is back to about 30th. He ended up passing back to 19th. Pushed all the way to the end passing one boy in the last corner and 1 on the final jumps. Moto 2 - 19th gate pick hammers another start. Looked like top 5 or 8. Kid in front of him wrecks, taking out half the field. My boy is the last one to get up and get going. The leaders were about 1/2 a lap ahead, next to last guy is way ahead of him. He passed up to 21st. Moto 3 - Crap start about 25th into the first corner. Passes up to 17th. Finishes 16th over all. I was hoping for top 15, so we were not disappointed. He still has another year and a half in this class so we are hoping he can give it another go next year. 10 by 4DAIVIPAI2K5, on Flickr He was the only Jr. 50 that I saw consistently hitting this double and clearing the finish line table. 8 by 4DAIVIPAI2K5, on Flickr 5 by 4DAIVIPAI2K5, on Flickr The 2nd wall jump where he got stuck in the 1st moto. 1 by 4DAIVIPAI2K5, on Flickr There was also a new track that opened up not far from us. Holy shit, that's awesome!
As a new rider, just looking at the air he's getting in those pics terrifies me. What kind of 50 does he ride? I've been wanting to pick one up to fart around on myself, and then get my nephew into riding on it. |

You will destroy the clutches with your weight which will take out stators and top ends from over heating. How old is the nephew? If he is not racing and you want something to play on check out the 110 four stokes. Honda, Kawi, Yamaha Suzuki all make them. They haul me around and we are getting one when the PW sells to help teach my boy how to shift ( they are clutchless 4 speeds.) |

He will out grow the crf50 with out doing some mods to it. The 110's would fit him perfect. Same shifting as the CRF50, Electric start also, there are tons of aftermarket stuff for them. A bunch of guys use them for pit bike racing... which may or may not happen to the one we get lol. My boy is already asking to get graphics for a bike that we havent even bought yet lol

Did some reading around, the 110 looks like it would fit the bill better.

Got my Zeta handguards in today. I also got some mirrors that bolt up inside the handguard. Only problem is I noticed, after I got them bolted up...is that they gave me 2 right side mirrors. Not a huge deal, as I can still see behind me on the left side, but I know it's gonna annoy me everytime I look at them. Symetrical problems.
Hoping Amazon will just send me a single replacement, but they came in a sealed blister pack, so that would require them tearing one open. We'll see. Attached File Attached File |

Thanks fella's. he defiantely has a good time. We are working hard on corners, he is struggling there still.
He got an invite from Loretta's Lynns for the National Championship as an alternate after missing out at the regional. he thought about it and at first said yes. Then after a few mins, he looks at me and says "Dad, I changed my mind" "I don't want to go this year, I want to wait until next year and earn it, I don't want it given to me" I had the biggest smile on my face we have talked so much about hard work, earning things in life and not quiting on yourself and always giving 100% Made me so proud to hear him say I want to earn it! I got him a new toy the next day, I'll post a picture sometime soon. |
