Well I took my ASVAB today nuked the math sections and needless to say I and got a 51 compared to everyone i hear getting 89s or at least high 70's.Should I retake it? Truth be told, unless its nonstop cleaning bathrooms like my old job or cooking I'm fine with most jobs as long as I can make a few friends, hold a occasional conversation, or have some time to write poetry or workout. The jobs I'm hoping for are Law Enforcement, Human Resources, Office and administration, and Information Professional or a Corpsman. I would love to try for EOD orr the SEALS but I'm not high speed low drag enough. My goal is to join for 8-12 years, save up my cash for a car, small house and land, send some to family if need be, and to take advantage of that sweet, sweet, G.I Bill.

Oh ARCOM give me your wisdom, advice, and funny stories.

Go for either GMG, AO or HM.

Screen for BUD/s, EOD, SWCC or SAR.

If you fail or get hurt, GMG, AO will still leave you with weapons handling in your future and Force Protection and Physical Security gigs.

HM IMO is the best as you can go FMF as well.

What I should have done in the beginning but AO left for boot the soonest...

ETA: And you posted in the "Deployed" section...

And IMHO, use the military to do stuff you'll never get to do anywhere else in your life...

I am a retired Navy Senior Chief.  If you are willing to give your time to serve your country - you should choose wisely the job you wish to do.  There are books you can get from amazon that will help you study for the ASVAB and I would highly suggest you take a month to study and retake.  Your options go way up with better scores.  If you really want a particular job - you should spend the small amount of time to study so that you can get what you want.  Short term pain for long term gain.

79-86 Navy and USMC   Used to be said that if you will go 10 then you might as well go for the 20 or more.  Even if you have a few low level college course that greatly increases the job options for you.  Listen to the Senior Chief.

I had to study the math and the tech stuff, came out with a first time 93. A high set of line scores will help you in the future for schools and promotions. It's worth it to study up and retest.

Any test worth taking is worth preparing for. Study and give it another shot.

Study, but don't get too worked up over the final score.  Figure out what you want to do and see if you scored well enough for it (I don't know what a 51 qualifies you for, maybe a classifier will show up in here and tell us, or you can google the jobs you want and see).

You might improve your score somewhat, if you fucked it off pretty badly, but you might not -- the ASVAB is an aptitude test, not a knowledge test.

I can tell you that you won't qualify for IT with a 51.  The jobs you're looking at based on what you typed here are MA (Master at Arms -- Navy police), YN (Yeoman -- administration/office), IT (Information Technician), and HM (Hospital Corpsman).  You can google any of those jobs and it should tell you what the minimum ASVAB is for them.

All you need to do is 36 months for GI Bill, if you get to twelve years you're not going to get out -- 20 is just too close at that point.  The only way you can do 3 years is to sign up under one of the apprenticeship programs, which I would never recommend -- if you get an A-school you'll have to do 4-6 years at a minimum.

There will be much cleaning of bathrooms, probably no cooking unless you go CS (Culinary Specialist), but until you make some rank you're probably going to do some cleaning.  There's a lot of cleaning that has to get done on a ship.

If you want to make money, see if you can get on a ship overseas, it's better money there than other places.

I'm a Chief Electronics Technician, about to go over 20 this year.
