[Last Edit: Blasko] [#1]
So I experimented yesterday...

(1) Following the advice on the Fah forum I set one GPU slot to finish. After it was done I paused the other two and shut the client down. I restarted the client and then restarted the finished GPU slot which promptly downloaded a p8108, so that didn't work.

(2) I then deleted all three GPU slots and dumped the p8108s, sorry Pande... uninstalled the client and deleted the data folder. Reinstalled the client which set itself up with 1 CPU slot and 3 GPU slots. All three GPU slots downloaded p8108, strike two....

(3) Deleted all of the slots and dumped the WUs, who am I kidding here? I am not sorry. Pande is telling me one thing but the client is doing something different, so how else do I figure out why I get stuck with the sucky work that beats on my gear and gives me crap for points? Anyway....I setup three GPU slots with the client-type beta flag. All three slots download p8900, strange because I don't think p8900 is a beta project. After the slots are running for a while I reset the client-type flag to advanced. Overnight all three slots finish the WUs and download three more p8900.

Conclusion? From what I see It seems that the client develops an affinity for a work server and you get work from that server. If p8108 is the highest priority right now then according to Pande I should have downloaded those overnight regardless of the flag setting.

Will be interesting to see how long I get p8900 before going back to p8108...

EDIT: actually I do regret dumping WU's. That screws with the project and I let my impatience get the best of me.

Just signed up and am running.  have a pretty monster workstation (CPU's anyway, weak GPU - dual 6-core/12-thread Xeons at 3.33Ghz):

I have not made a single change to the default settings.  Anything I should do?  It says "5005 Points Per Day" for my CPU, and 1593 "estimated" for my Radeon Pro GPU.

Thanks,

Jon

Welcome Jon,

Factory CPU settings are best for reliability. It's no fun coming home to find a blue (or black) screen of death.

Download CPUID Hardware Monitor to keep an eye on those temperatures.

been a while for me. I don't do any distributed computing in the summer due to heat, my pc is upstairs which gets ridiculously hot when the sun is out in the summer
lately I've been doing boinc. folding was acting up on me when I last tried it. Maybe I'll check for an updated client

so apparently folding is ok with the data directory not being the default but if the program directory isn't the default it will cause python errors when loading fahcontrol
I reinstalled using the default program directory and it's working normally again for me

I should show up on the list within a few days. Going to let folding run while I'm watching football today and over night

well, in only 3 days I advanced from position 100+ to position 34 on the arf leader board.  Cranking out 110k a day. These new gpu's and cpu's are really fast!!!!
the advanced gui says 110k, but teh GPU browser screen says 83k for the CPU and 57k for the GPU. The CPU browser screen says 11k for CPU and 1.4 k for GPU. Makes no sense, doesnt add up to 110k....so I dunno what the real number is, but its going fast.
Setting is on high.

Since the release of the newer clients, v7+, I think a lot of the third party management software has fallen by the wayside.

The PPD calculation in the fah client can be volatile at times. After running a few frames (5% or so) it will settle down.

I just joined and started folding.  I'm using my Alienware X51R2 with an I7 and Nvidia GTX 760.  I'm concerned though as my GPU temp went from 45C to 83C and the CPU was at 77C. The Alienware is a small footprint and pretty cramped inside so airflow is an issue.  How safe is it running at these temps?

What are your fan speeds?

My personal temperature preferences are:

less than 65c
less than 74c
between 75 and 77c
over 77c
over 80c

For short bursts 80c is ok, but I've had several GTX780s nuke themselves running that hot 24/7 within a week or two.

Wow, I'm still ranked #15 in our team and haven't had anything active in almost 5 years.  I was running a GTX 260 OC and a GTX 275 back then, maybe a GTX 460 thrown in the mix.  Might get back in when I get a GTX 1080 or similar, but I'm waiting to see all of the new models before I decide on what to get someday.

I think it's the design of the slim line case of the Alienware X51's. There's a signal CPU exhaust fan and the GTX 660 is designed to rear vent from the card.  I opened up the case and pointed an external fan over the GPU to aid cooling.  My temps are better now, CPU runs about 158 degrees at full power and the GPU is 158-160 degrees.

I upgraded the X51's GPU to an Nvidia GTX 760 and can get 180K+ points a day on full power, but I'm going to take the spare parts I have and build a dedicated system for folding. I'll leave the new system on in the basement and the Alienware will go back to  desktop duties, or maybe light power folding.  The basement system should do pretty well: ASUS Sabertooth 990FX M/B with an AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition, an Nvidia GTX 770 and all in a Corsair carbide series case with plenty of cooling. I'll keep it running for a year and see what happens.

My mother has Alzheimer's and I had prostate cancer at 53, so I think this is a good way to give back to help a good cause.  Heck, what's a year's electricity on a 500w power supply?

[#29]
Those are much better temps! I'm using a Corsair Vengeance C70 and ended up doing the same thing - opened the case and got better cooling.

Dittos about giving back. This started off as a hobby, but has hit close to home in the last year.

Well, scratch one GTX 960, looks like it couldn't take the heat.  I was running the client on medium and even with the case open and an extra fan, the 960 held steady at 71C. At night I would throttle back to light folding and then crank it back up during the day.  It was running well until the system rebooted and started the BSOD and BCCode 116 errors.  Back to Amazon it goes and I'll replace it with a GTX 970 in the new build this weekend.  In the meantime the old 660 is chugging away, albeit on light folding.

Took longer than I had hoped to get the folding machine up and running.  #2 son liberated the Sabertooth and left me with an older ASUS M4A79T Deluxe, which was a pretty hot board for 2009.  I had to do a new install with Win7 as I couldn't get the client to connect and then ran it for a bit with the GTX 770, which was slooooooow.  Replaced it with the GTX 970 this morning and am chugging away on medium with a CPU temp of 47C and the GPU running at 65C with a 60% load.

The GTX 970 can be reliably overclocked to 1515 MHz if cooling fans permit.

I'm getting about 225,000 points a day running the 970 at a nominal level that keeps the temp at 149 degrees.  When prices of the 1070s drop a bit and we get better configuration options from the manufacturers, I could do an upgrade and receive about 500,000 point daily.

I have an EVGA card and use the EVGA PrecisionX 16 program to control the GPU.  I currently have it set to a base clock of 1215Mhz with a max GPU temp of 65C, which has the card operating at about 70% of it's max power.  That keeps me at 215-226K PPD while keeping the GPU and card relatively cool.

So I was reading through posts tonight and somehow missed this...sorry to hear that and I hope you are doing well. I have a serious case of hate for cancer.

My dad died in August 2001 after a 6-7 year battle with renal cell cancer. Had to fight with the VA to get treatment. Back pain was misdiagnosed for fucking years....went through his lungs, bones and finally brain.

In 2009, my nephew was diagnosed with Burkett's lymphoma. Going to the children's cancer ward to visit was horrifying. Kids shouldn't have to go through that. He displayed bravery I hope that I have. The chemo made it almost impossible for him to eat. He loved McDonald's fries and would eat one and promptly puke his guts out. Would wait a few minutes and then tell my sister, "ok mom I'll have another" and then puke his guts out again. He is doing good now but will need an oncologist for the rest of his life.

In 2014, my middle sister was diagnosed with an aggressive breast cancer found at stage 3, when she was pregnant. It had spread to her skin and lymph nodes so technically it was stage 4 I guess. I took her to get an abortion before they started her treatment. Part of her treatment was a designer antibody manufactured just for her. She went in to remission and then had a double mastectomy. She is doing good now and is going to school to be a vet tech. She won't ever be able to have kids though.

Sorry for the long post...

I contribute for my kids because I hope cancer can be eradicated.

I appreciate everyone else who contributes...thank you.

You've been through a lot my friend, stay strong!

I think cancer will be cured in my lifetime and I'm 59.  Some of the designer treatments, and the pioneering research using Aids to surround and kill cancer cells show real promise. I can only hope what we're doing will play a part in the cure, but even if it doesn't directly, maybe the distributed community is allowing priority research to move forward.

I just installed the 1070 and fired it up.  I was getting 226K PPD with the GTX 970 and with the GTX 1070 it's moved up to 502K PPD. I still haven't tweaked the card's settings, maybe I can eek out a bit more by managing the overclocking. It says it's running at 100% power at 1215MHz, but I think I can OC it since running the folding program at 100% GPU power is only heating the card to 41C.

ETA: Made some small tweaks to the card as well as moved the folding program to full power.  So far, the card is staying at 51C and reporting 621,000 PPD!

Thanks, I'll have to give EVGA PrecisionX 16 a try. Switched to EVGA cards about a year ago (which have been dead nuts reliable) after horrible failures with MSI.

Checked this morning and the CPU is running at 50C and the GPU at 51C with the folding program at full power and the GPU at 100% power; now delivering 513K PPD, which is what I'd suspect would be the new normal.

ETA:  Back up to 623K PPD; maybe the variance is WU dependent???
