Alright guys, I could use a wee bit of help.
Shockingly, I have never actually built a new system from the ground up
However, it is past time to rectify that, and the system will be purpose built for photo editing and storage.
Lightroom and photoshop will be the mainstays, I have CS6 as well as the cloud subscription.
I shoot in RAW, and the D810 produces huge files, plus I want to be able to do stacking and stitching of multiple files at a time.
I will be delving into movie editing also since the D810 produces such beautiful video.
The other boxes I have just can't keep up, and I would definitely like to jump into this and build something awesome.
I have a basic understanding of how everything works, but what I need is recommendations for all the individual components, and how to find out if all the parts will play together nicely.

I think it will be a win7 pro platform, I have unused licenses, but I am not against a win10 machine if the new hardware would be better off on that platform.
I am not constrained by a particular budget for this project.  I do feel that if a particular component will get me 95%, but would double in cost to get to 100%, that's probably not worth it.

So given these parameters, if you were gonna do something kick ass for yourself, what would your wish list look like?

Actually, after spending a few days researching, I'm not surprised no one had any recommendations.

It was a bigger question than I realized, and people probably thought I wanted someone else to do my homework for me.
What I really wanted was to start somewhere, anywhere, so I could get an idea of how the thought process for a new build goes.
That's why I said budget was not the primary issue, and also said it was very purpose specific.

Anyway, I found a couple of parts picker and compatability sites, and did a lot of reading.

I'll post up what I decided on.  It's way overkill I think, but should do what I want really nicely.

OK, so after discovering PCpartpicker I started with the CPU

I wanted fast so I went i7 6700K 4Ghz. Once I made that decision, almost all the other parts fell into place.
Newegg had a special on a mobo combo with the Asus MaximusVIII Hero ATX, and the Cooler Master Hyper 212.
For RAM, G Skill Trident series DDR4-3200
I picked the MSI GeForce GTX 1070 video card.
I also went with a Samsung 850 evo series 1TB SSD and a WD Black 6TB HD
Power supply is an EVGA 850W 80+ Gold

Aside from that, the miscellaneous stuff is an optical drive, wifi adapter, few extra fans, and I think that's it.
Corsair mid tower case.

Oh, and a good internal card reader, since that's how the whole thing started.

I grabbed a 4K KVM switch to use with my current Samsung monitor that I love (SE790C), everything else I already have also.

It all ran about $2K with combos, I could have done a bit better if I went with all the lowest priced vendors, but I intentionally selected Newegg and B and H for the rapid free local delivery.
The last parts are arriving today, and I will get started on this.

I did go with win10 pro.

I have it on my surface, so I am comfortable with it, even though I like 7 just fine.

Might as well get used to it on a desktop.
