My business was broken into last night, and I'm trying to access the landlord's security cameras.

Gotta use IE - because Microsoft.

Gotta allow 'download of unsigned activex controls' because interwebs

Gotta 'allow install of activex controls'

Gotta sidestep several IE warnings about security, that Microsoft wants to fix for me.

So the download works.

But 'an add-on for this website failed to run'.

So fuck Microsoft, fuck IE, fuck vendors that insist on unsigned controls, and fuck internet security.

And fuck Microsoft.

Did I say fuck Microsoft yet.

So I turned off all security, and then IE refused to run the add-on.

anybody got any ideas?

Yeah fuck Microsoft for providing a bunch of security measures that for some fucktard reason you're forced to disable.

Anybody ?

This is not a rant. Well it is, but I also need some assistance,

as whoever broke in, also hit 3 other businesses - my neighbors, in an industrial park,

and we cannot get access to the cameras.

Um call the landlord? Have you accessed the cameras before?

I can also go ahead and say that of everything involved, Microsoft is the least to blame.

Instead of using their shitty non working browser interface, I'd be exploring other options for accessing the recorded video.

Is it saved on a server somewhere? Can probably get to it with some networking. IP cameras with internal storage? Might be able to do the same.

I'd even go so far as to punch the camera model / controller model into google and see what I could find.

example: access recordings stupidcamera 1.0.35.87

Add the interface URL to Trusted Sites.

Got it solved.

Found the mfgrs website, and read thru the forums.

Gotta use IE 32 bit version, even on 64 bit Windows.

Gotta allow unsigned Activex controls.

Gotta allow misc downloads.

Gotta turn off some other stuff in security.

Gotta put DVR IP in trusted sites.

This gets to login screen.

Now here is where it gets good.

Enter ID and password. Click on OK to accept. Nothing.

Further reading I find that in IE11 I gotta TAB to the OK button, then click it.

But my laptop with Vista and IE8 worked just fine.

Because Microsoft.

I want my 24 hours back. Why does it have to be this difficult?

You want to know why it's so difficult? Because it's the most sophisticated technology ever created by mankind. The fact computers work at all is a miracle of science and engineering, are you so arrogant to think that using and maintaining what is essentially magic wouldn't require you to have knowledge and skill?

I've been fucking with computers since the '70's.

Since compiling custom versions of C/PM.

Have built some interesting hardware, and made it run.

Done a fair about of coding in several different languages.

I understand data entry, error-trapping and good error messages.

So i have a pretty good idea what good software is,

and IE isn't, and has never been.

It's buggy, full of holes, and very sloppy.

But I don't understand ActiveX controls, just like Microsoft, apparently.

That I why I asked for assistance.

And thanks for helping. Your comments made a difference. [click]

So the fact that IE11 is the 3rd fastest and secure browser of the last five years is lost on you?  Also if you know what good software is, you should be able to realize in this instance that the fault is with the crap software on the DVR, right?

Of course the DVR software is crap coded up by some Chinese code-slave making $.25 a day, we all understand that.

However, your analogy implies that you'd blame the rat, and not the dump for the existence of rats.

The dump (IE8) is gone, the new vacant lot down town (IE11) does not like the rats (DVR software) because they are total crap and trying to helpfully inform OP that they are crap and preventing them from infecting the new vacant lot.

Seriously, you guys can't bitch about IE being insecure, and then bitch and moan about it no longer allows insecure things to happen.
