Looking at a Surface Pro 2 (8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD).

Any experience?

Used one as my primary machine until the Surface Pro 3 came out, then upgraded - the 2 was great, but my eyes aren't the best, so the larger screen on the 3 sold it for me...

Why not go with a surface pro 3?  Microsoft is having a sale now. ($150 off)

I've never used one myself, but have set them up for other end users. I've been impressed.  Unless something has changed the Pro 3 is Wifi only (no wireless carrier i.e. AT&T or Verizon).  It's a tablet that runs Windows apps , what's not to like? So far they have ran everything we've asked them to - older software suites, Office of course, etc.

For my personal use a $200 Samsung tablet is perfect.  If my company were buying it, I'd have no issues using a $1,000 Surface

We have a few but never really found a good niche for them.  They are R&D units so I took one for a few weeks and used it in place of my laptop.  I'm sure there are a lot of use cases and individual requirements where they shine but for me it was sort of a solution looking for a problem.

Eh, I think I'm just old school.

The new Surface 3 (NOT SURFACE PRO 3) has  a 3G / 4G / LTE option...

Price.  I bargain hunted a Surface Pro 2 with 8 Gb RAM and a 512 Gb SSD for less than $700.  That Pro 3 has half the SSD space and costs almost twice as much.

With 8 Gb of RAM and a 512 Gb SSD and running the full-blown Windows 8.1, it's a ultrabook replacement (with the Power Type cover).

It's a decent device if you understand its limitations.  You may want to consider this alternative before you make any purchases:

These are more than decent devices with a bit of power. They're not high-end workstations, but legitimately they'll do anything a 3-5 year old desktop will do. And because of the SSD, will do a lot of it faster.

I've got a Dell Venue 11 Pro with a Core M-5Y71, 8GB, and 256GB SSD on order for work. (Those are higher specs than you can find on Dells website)

Plus, if you have an overactive IT Department, it's a lot harder for them to do stupid shit to slow your computer down in Win8.1. (Or at least they haven't figured out how to yet...)

I'm currently using a Sony Viao Pro-13 (8 Gb RAM; 256 Gb SSD; i5-4200; Win 7 Pro).  I love it but Sony discontinued their computers.
