My gf's son is getting into some objectionable Internet sites. She wants to know how to block some of this content.

If you have specific sites in mind, read up on editting the "Hosts" file.

Basically, you point a domain name to where YOU want it to go.

Try OpenDNS. http://www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/parental-controls/opendns-home/

It's easy to set up and free. Yes if the kid is determined he will find a way around it but it's not a bad idea to use anyway.

ETA: if you just need to block porn use the OpenDNS Family Shield. it's simpler.

+1 OpenDNS.

If you want a cheap appliance, look at untangle.  I use it at home for the kiddos and its fantastic.  Can run on old hardware, or spend $150 and get a small Atom box with dual NICs.

You can block it at the computer w/ a firewall or hosts file.  You can block it by using a DNS provider that will let you block at that level.  You can block it at the router.  You can combine methods if you want more coverage.

Only problem w/ blocking at the DNS level is unless you've locked the computer down it's trivial to change your dns to something like 8.8.8.8 or 4.2.2.1 and get around it.

Agreed.  I run pfsense and untangle here, each on an Atom D2550, with dual intel NICs, and the setup is superb for keeping my young ones on only sites I approve....

pfsense and I have been in a never ending config war since I started using it a couple years ago.

untangle "just works" and was incredibly easy to set up.

OP, if you can log into a consumer grade router and configure a few things, then setting up an untangle appliance will be a walk in the park for you.

add ram and a cheap small disk and off you go.  2gb is plenty.  get a 60gb laptop disk from ebay for $14.  whole setup configured will run you less than $200 when you factor in shipping and a six pack.

that is what I use. keeps the kids from going to the wrong website.
lets me know when they try to disable it as well.
the wife hates it for when she tries to go places it is blocking, but it keeps the kids from wandering intentinally or otherwise.

I'm using OpenDNS and DD-WRT to filter porn and left leaning sites, e.g. MoveOn.org and DU, on my guest wifi network. If your router supports DD-WRT you can use it to write rules to force a segment of your network onto a the filtered OpenDNS.

norton family

free
easy to set up
multiple pc's
blocks can be setup by login profile or all profiles
choose what to block by website and genre(sex, drugs, violence, etc)
time locks available( mine cuts kids off at 11pm so they cant get up in the middle of the night and sneak on pc)
can be setup to email you alerts for different activities
web monitoring
chat monitoring
social monitoring

I've been using it for years
its not perfect but is damn good for your average family

several friends told me i was being overprotective and should just say no to kids
then asked later to show THEM where to find it online for their kids

This, all the other solutions posted above (except for the Norton solution which I have no experience with but as a rule, I do no trust Norton products) require some understanding of internet protocols and the like. K9 is a simple set it and forget it program that can be set on a computer level that is easy to use. Its easy to undo with just a password or you can setup a separate profile and put blocks on just that profile.

I have Microsoft Family Safety setup and keeping my daughter from getting into trouble.  I'm not worried about porn, but she likes playing Minecraft and I can block any sites I want or only allow certain sites. I can also enforce time limits. I can also log into it from anywhere and get reports of what she's been doing.
