Tonight we had the perfect storm pass through.  Really hot day, quick shower with lots and lots of lightning, most of it being cloud-to-cloud.   Unfortunately, I was out with the family and caught unprepared.  I got to catch the back side of the storm and went to a location I've never been before, but thought it would be good to shoot, the side of a bypass ends, and gets little traffic.  I got about 4 shots, but thought these two were the best.  I was jumping for joy when I got them haha.

The lightning was happening about once every 8sec when I was driving trying to find a location, then slacked off to about once a minute once I got set up.  After about 15-20min, it ended like it was never there.  I tried to drive around to find the storm, but it had petered out.  Anyways, here are the shots....

30sec @f8, ISO400

30sec @f8, ISO400

Edited to add:  Focus was on the tree line on both shots.  I used LiveView and focused on the street lights.

Nice!!!

Really wish we would get some damn storms here. The last time we had one, it was really going off. I ran inside, mounted my camera to my tripod and ran back out. There were no more flashes, my wife said that it literally stopped when I got the camera mounted and was coming back out. We sat outside for an hour waiting for any more activity; there were no more flashes that night

pics not working for me, not sure why.

Edit, when I quote it and click the link, they work. Cool shots though!

Why not just use the IMG code from your photobucket album, like this?

Because I'm trying to make it harder for people to access my photobucket account.

Thanks!  They're elusive SOBs, especially in the mountains down here.  My goal this summer is to get a shot of traffic and lightning, and shoot a shot over water. I almost got the traffic one, but wish I had found a stable overpass to shoot from.

Nice!

I cant wait for monsoon here to go out shooting lightning again.  Last year sucked for it, too many dust storms and rain wrapped lightning.

It was loud as shit. I went inside after, I'm going to be more careful . This one must have traveled like 10 miles from the the horizon. I have other pics of the lightning storm too!

Same here, this landed on the other side of the houses across the street, the bolt started above and behind me.  My camera was pointed up at about 45-50deg and I was standing in my doorway.  The thunder actually moved me about 1/2".

Yeah my main rule to shooting is, if I have to point my camera up, I'm too close.

Same here but I bent that rule since it was technically inside the house while taking this photo.  Still ended my session that night lol.

This is the closest I've ever gotten to a big strike.  I've had some cloud-to-cloud go overhead, but this one was by far the loudest and knocked me back a bit.  It looks far away, but was just over those buildings.  I wish I still had the RAW file.

Very cool!

I took 384 25-sec exposures of the storm we had last night, got lightning in about 15 of them, and ALL of them were out of focus.  Guess I bumped the focus ring at some point.

Oh well, still have my grail shot...

Hell, here it is again.  Tried finding the strike yesterday, had to be within about 2,000 feet; guess I got my bearing wrong.  Might get my better compass and go hunting again this weekend.

Got my first shot last night after trying quite a few times.  I have a good bit of banding in the sky which I couldn't quite get rid of, but all in all I am happy!

That's awesome!  I love the way they light up the clouds.  Looks like it might have been a quick flash since it didn't overexpose at f2.8.  It's super tough to get lighting to behave.

Yep, I am going to have to keep trying!
