The tree on the left is in focus.
The EXIF data says it was shot at f/1.8 which will give you a very thin depth of field.

My guess is that the camera was in some type of auto-AF mode and picked the wrong subject (closest object), maybe.

You have a D7100. Make sure your diopter is properly adjusted.

Focus the camera on something, I don't even care what.

Now knock it out of focus so you see a nice smooth creamy blur.

Look at the lines on the screen, like your focus point and the framing lines and all that.

If they're not crisp and sharp and thin..you need a diopter adjustment. Twiddle it around until those lines look good to your eyes.

Also, if this is a consistent problem you may need to adjust the AF fine tune. I've got a thread in here about that somewhere.

1.8? Damn, running that lens wide open. That would definitely be a very shallow depth of field. Yeah, AF picked the tree or something close to focus on and messed you up.  Try going to manual focus or adjust your settings for a deeper depth of field.

Thanks. I need to get back to messing with macro stuff. I've been playing too much with my vault boy bobblehead.

Still haven't come up with anything to top the shots I've already done of it though.

Sometimes if a subject isn't inspiring any longer, you have to just tell yourself that it is what it is and move on.  If that is not an option, then you have to make very drastic changes to what your doing.

Don't get hung up on "M" mode. There's a rumor going around that "pros only shoot in manual" and that's far from true. It has its uses but aperture priority and shutter priority also have their place.

I don't want you to misunderstand me, it's a good thing to know how your camera works and to be able to work out a shot in manual. It's also good to be comfortable with the aperture and shutter priority modes. Those 3 you should focus on. Any other mode is for communists and instagram.

I played with those as well and my image kept blowing out. It was either super over exposed or way under. It seemed like no matter how I set the ISO it would cooperate. So I put it in "M" and adjusted according to the metering.

I'm not sure what camera you have but these tips apply to virtually all modern DSLR cameras.

1 - the meter lies. There are different metering modes (spot, center weighted, full frame) and each provides a different result and each has its uses but remember, the meter lies.

2) the screen on the back of your camera also lies. it is not a fair judge of exposure, and only slightly better at judging focus.

c: the histogram is a far better way to gauge the overall exposure and detail content of the image. if the histogram is scrunched all the way to the left, it's underexposed. All the way to the right, overexposed. Balanced across the middle isn't entirely bad, but I prefer to have mine leaning towards the right.

Learn how to read a histogram and apply it to your shooting. Learn what the metering modes are used for and it's OK to use it as a rough guide but don't trust it blindly. Also consider when you're in one of the aperture or shutter priority modes, the best way to adjust the exposure is with exposure compensation. Some cameras require a button press and a wheel turn for this, others can be set to adjust it by a wheel turn when in one of the applicable modes.

Read this for more info http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_121/1804564_Let_s_talk_about_exposure___reasons_to_overexpose_your_images_and_why_high_ISO_isn_t_bad__new_pics.html
