I think it's called an interference pattern. Waves bouncing off of the walls of the dish, and reflecting back. I'm not 100% sure of this. I do know I shot that with 1/6400 shutter speed to get it to look like that. |

I spent some time last night in Gentleman's (Luke's) neck of the woods. I thought about exploring the area a little more to get some better shots, but I was so worn out from taking photos all day I just got this from the parking lot of my hotel

If you're shooting in RAW (with an 810, you absolutely should be) deliberately underexposing is actually the opposite of what you want to do. I've been meaning to write up a post about this for a while now, and I've just found the motivation. Check the forum pretty regular over the next few days, I'll have it up. I've got to get off my ass and shoot some example images and such for it, and with the weather being a complete and total crap salad like it's been the past week or so, I don't get much opportunity for pictures. Short version is - expose to the right. If you're deliberately underexposing your image, you're actually giving up a *lot* of your camera's dynamic range...and you're adding noise by boosting in post. A minor over exposure (I tend to go around 1 stop +/- a bit depending on circumstances) will allow you to retain highlights by pulling them back in post..but you're getting a lot closer to a proper exposure in your shadows. I'll explain it a lot better in the discussion I plan to start over the next few days. Key points will be ETTR, why high ISO isn't actually bad, and how it doesn't contribute as much to a noisy image as a lot of people seem to think it does. I'll prove it by shooting an image at ISO 100 and it will be noisier than one shot at I haven't decided how high yet. I'm thinking 1600 seems fair. Maybe higher. It'll be interesting, and worth the wait, promise! |

I've been shooting that way for years, but I'm always open to learning something new. ETA, and yes, I only shoot in RAW. What goes out for release/print is converted to JPEG, typically, but I always work from RAW. |
