I just got into an abstract mood last weekend.

Long exposure with a light stick moved behind a crystal ball sitting on a piece of Plexiglas.

The photo is interesting enough (with good focus on a macro shot), but my question is about this content that I have not seen on any other photo posted here:

I went all out and built a $6 dollar light box.

Used the lamp I already had laying around.

If you're not shooting in RAW, you should be. Give em a bit of a tweaking.

Is it possibly because the lamp I'm using has a slight yellowish tint to the bulb?

I had the NEF files and was messing around in lightroom. I got lazy and this is the byproduct.

That would do it.  When you open the image up in Adobe RAW, there should be a little teardropper in the upper left corner next to the magnifying glass.  That's your white balance tool.  Click it on somewhere that should be white, and it'll get you 98% towards the right tones.

For product photography, I have found it really helps to have a reference gray card like the WhiBal G7. This is an inexpensive option that makes it easy to follow NorthPolar's steps above.

A more comprehensive solution is something like the X-Rite ColorChecker. The ColorChecker comes with software to allow you to create a full color profile (rather than a simple white balance adjustment) for your specific camera. This helps ensure all your colors are correct, but may be overkill if your goal is creating product photos for eBay or humble-brag posts.

Using the WhiBal is easiest as you simply put it next to your subject and take your shot. (It actually helps if you soften your focus for this frame.) Let's call this the "reference shot". After taking the reference shot, remove the card, confirm your focus, and take your series of product shots as you normally would. You only need a new reference shot if your lighting changes. Take your series into Lightroom (or similar processor), open the reference shot, then use the white balance selector to select the gray card as the white balance reference. To apply that adjustment to a series of photos, select all the photos to be adjusted using the film strip, then click the "Sync..." button.

If you plan on portrait work, the gray card will be one of your best friends.

Go down to home depo and read some lightbulb boxes. You can buy 5200k bulb. Sunlight is 5200 degrees Kelvin.

This is a cheap way to get a good white balance indoors, if you keep out, or overpower all other light sources.

You can divide the count by 350 to get a more accurate number .  350 5-second exposures stacked.

Those plane shots are really cool.

I didn't take any of the planes, but I got a seagull at Venice beach.

Thank you for the positive feedback, I am constantly trying to improve myself.

As for the membership, though I spend more time lurking/reading than actually participating/posting, I will probably get one sooner or later.

Our season may be over but theirs isn't.  Tom got spooked by the Tamzooka and didn't let me get shots of his fan.

Interestingly, when he's strutting his snood will extend almost all the way down his neck.  Fan goes down, snood contracts.

Br'er Rabbit ain't got shit on me.  Everything you see in this picture has thorn and wants to poke holes in you.  Blackberry, greenbrier, devil's walking stick.  Oh, and a few pine trees scattered about.  Camera is held head-high.

Got to run 52 plots on a 3x5 grid yesterday through this shit; 5.7 miles of cruise line.  Sometimes I hate my job.
