Digital bodies overcome the problems the lenses had on film.  If Nikon made these again with AF motors and modern ED glass, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.  Hell, even this old one still rocks.  If I get the opportunity, I'll buy the latest version they made (orange ring on the body) because it focuses a lot closer to where they considered it a macro lens.  For the most part, it's just 1/1000 or 1/1250 shutter and letting auto ISO do it's work.  That way the shutter and mirror don't bounce the image any.  Plus side is that I can hand hold the camera like I did yesterday.

Gotta run it on CF though, as the depth of field is razor thin.  That way if I have to make focus adjustments and I miss it a tad one way or another, I'll still get a frame or two nice and sharp.  Example is below, as there were 3-4 in focus and the rest slightly out because it was moving.

You can build one for pretty darn cheap dude.  Hell, the one I use right now is literally 4 sheets of white foamcore held together with gaffers tape.

Yes, and thank you.  Can't remember how I got that color mix except I'm sure it involved a filter (polarizer?  Not sure).  That is how the negative looks though--all I did in post was straighten it and get rid of a damage artifact in the corner.

Caravans have an underslung cargo pod.

What I find more telling is that it doesn't have an N-number.

Yeah, I live in an area with a lot of .mil training going on. This was shot at a small airport kind of east of nowhere. No other air traffic going on at the time. I was passing by and stopped as it was practicing touch and go's.  No N number, unknown tank on the bottom, modded exhaust. Strange marking on nose,
I don't know.

Looks like one of those AC-208 Combat Caravans.   Don't know anything about them, though.

Yup, like others said, cargo pod. Can't remember for the life of me what model it is though. The exhaust isn't modded, it's a turbo-prop so the exhaust is designed in a way to limit restrictions and get it away from the body so it doesn't scorch/burn.

So I kinda got one of my dream shots.  Shame is it wasn't better, but I barely made it outside in time to take it.  3 Apache flight zipping overhead back towards post.  At least I have all summer to try to get better shots.

With the 500mm handheld 1/1000 is pretty much the minimum to get anything sharp results wise. Love the lens, but you've gotta run it fast. I would have swapped to the 70-300 if I had time.
