That's less then $500?

My wife wants a good camera for Christmas. I really don't know anything about good cameras. All my photos come from my phone

I'm very pleased with my Canon T3i

$443 for the kit

There's also some Prime eligible choices for ~$320 but they're used or refurbished.

I just bought my 18-year old daughter a Sony Cybershot DSC-WX350 for $289. It's a point and shoot with enough extra features to make it much more versatile than a phone. I've used a Canon G11 for years, which is considered "pro-sumer" and I think the Sony is the perfect camera for people who want some customization in their shots but who aren't photo geeks.

These new cameras have WiFi, GPS, and 1080p HDMI. Crazy.

Are you looking for a DSLR or an advanced point-n-shoot?

No idea.

Wife just wants a nice camera, something under $500 and not a cheap digital flat rectangle camera.

Doesn't need lots of bells nor whistles, just easy to use, digital, easy to upload.

Trying to avoid that style of camera, we seem to go through those too easily for some reason...

Get her a nice point and shoot instead of a DSLR if she wants something easy to use.
A DSLR is pointless unless she wants to invest time in learning how to use it.

This. No point in getting a DSLR if it's just going to sit in AUTO all the time.

Got the D3200 today, looks pretty awesome. If she doesn't learn how to use it well then I'll just add it to my list of hobbies

Got it for $479 with case, strap and 16gb memory card.

Ditch the strap ASAP.
I robbed a wannabee IDF sling from my HD carbine.  Put some paracord loops through my D3100 strap mounting points.
The sling has 360 degree swivels.  There's a small pocket that big enough for a spare battery and a couple SD cards.
Much better then that goofy Nikon tourist strap.

You should look for something with a Sony sensor inside.  That would be the obvious, Sony, but also Nikon and many from the Pentax line, plus others.

This is not Canon who has not updated their sensor technology and has fallen behind.
