I think I'm figuring these Russians out. I'm just not used to anything so slow and heavy that has absolutely zero ability to look down. You have to be very picky about your positioning because if you have to climb any sort of incline to get into a position of fire you're going to have to climb all the way to the crest of the hill to get on target and getting up that hill is going to take quite a while...
Just went 11/0 my last game though with the IS-2 mod '44. edit: Having heavy bombers being used for CAS in this game when you're playing a tank match is beyond me and it has to go. Either that or ad a penalty for getting shot down when you're in a plane. These suicide bombers are getting fucking ridiculous. |

Well, the 75mm has about the same penetration as the Soviet gun (for the 1940 version, same BR as the M3. The T34 armor is slightly thicker, but angled much more heavily on the hull. Aim for the turret if possible, using the M61 shot if at all possible - don't bother with the high explosive rounds, just use the best upgraded AP ammo. Maneuver is key here - you need to stay back and keep your 75mm pointed at the target. The 37mm may penetrate at closer ranges, but the 75 is better and does more damage at all ranges. Besides, if the 75mm can hit it, so can the 37, so maneuver to keep the 75 on target but keep firing with the 75 as well. The Sherman has better frontal armor, and it is sloped much more effectively than the M3, so you'll do better there, and the sides are much smaller, though no better armored. The biggest limitation with the Lee is the limited arc of the 75mm gun, followed by the height and huge vertical sides. The Sherman will have better frontal and turret armor (and the gun has 360 traverse), but the 75mm gun will have only a modest increase in penetration (and you'll have to research the ammunition all over again). You'll also have a higher BR, so be more likely to face later T34s. Note also that matchmaking is done by the Battle Rating of your tank. The Lee is 2.7, but if you've got another tank with a higher rating crewed up and ready to go, then the highest rating will be used when putting you into a match, so try to keep the ratings as close together as you can. For all the shit that pisses me off in this game sometimes I see things that are just awesome.
Just now I was doing a straffing run on an enemy jagdpanther from behind when I saw a friendly shell tracer flying towards it. The round skipped off the sloped armor of the jadgpanther, shot up into the air and blew my plane out of the sky. Earlier today I got a beautiful side shot on Panzer III with my IS-2. Unfortunately the round went right through without doing much damage BUT it did go straight out the other side and smoke a T-34 from behind that was on the other side of the Panzer III. |
