How much should I start saving up for this? Not looking for top of the line equipment, just some stuff to get me by.

Start doing yard sales like its your religion.
There are some great deals out there. The more upscale the area the better.
Stick to buying free weights, plates, bars, dumbbells and power racks.
Avoid machines.

You're only inviting everyone to tell you how they think you should be working out, so pepper your angus for a lot of squat/deadlift/bench, 5/3/1, St. Rippetoe, etc.

If you want to workout then workout, if you want to cruise for ass then cruise for ass. There's an appropriate time and place for each.

You're on the right track OP.

that's about the route i'd go except i'm far more of a cheapskate, i got a bar and plates from some local sporting good store, a beat to fuck old bench, rack and extra plates for free from a friend, put together some old flooring on some mats to drop weights on also just found an online guide to starting strength.

I think i've got about $200 in my set up but it is somewhat inadequate. I would benefit from the power rack above, having no safety arms i keep my bench at a very comfortable level, I'm going to need some bumper plates soon as well would have been nice to have them this whole time and the book would probably help me with form a bit.

Watch out for those bars, they WILL break and they almost always are 7-8 pounds too light.

well i never weighed it and that doesn't matter to me much, been using it for like 3 months only issue was one of the allen key fasteners holding it together started to come loose. I don't really drop the bar much so it's not much of a testament to it's sturdiness, i have another bar that my friend gave me with the bench if this one breaks. If i actually get my lifts to some respectable level or do something more oly than starting strength i'll pick up a better one.

What's your poison (e.g. big barbell lifts, dumbbells, cable-based routines, bodyweight and calisthenics)?  You're only inviting everyone to tell you how they think you should be working out, so pepper your angus for a lot of squat/deadlift/bench, 5/3/1, St. Rippetoe, etc.

Minimum $300 if you went the route of used bench and adjustable dumbbell set with ~150lbs of plates.
