Ok kids. You guys have been real bros to me and so I am gonna try to be a bro right back. My Slater 18" mold seemed to make a deal nice stone (should make about 240# stone.) But I only need 1 stone that size. Molds are expensive but concrete is cheap. I got this mold hella cheap and I wanna share the love. So this thread is for if you wanna make your own. Here's how it's gonna work: You post in this thread. June 1st I mail the mold to the first person. They have 30days to make however many stones they want. They clean it and pack it up. They mail it to the next person on the list. The mold won't last forever, but we should get quite a few stones before the mold goes tits up. I am going to keep the initial list to 6, that gets the last person their mold by Christmas. Rules: please be courteous No stones for profit. I know it's tempting but I could make them for profit too you know. Try not to break it, but they do have a limited lifespan, we all understand Ship the mold to the next guy by the 1st of his month. If you happen to buy a bigger or smaller mold, share the love. Mods, if I am doing something wrong here let me know. I'm also interested in the foam core method. I wouldn't mind making a stone that's absurdly light just for grins. Something like a 14 inch foam ball in the center of the stone. I also know shit about concrete but I would suspect there's some kind of point where the size of the foam core would reduce the integrity of the stone. |

I can help- To make a strong concrete ring around a foam core I suggest you do a couple of things- 1- use something stronger than post mix. That shit is only about 1500psi concrete where your footing in your house (typically the lowest strength concrete used) are 3,000 and a structural slab is about 5,000psi. There's a few ways to do this, maybe the best is to use post mix and also add some extra cement. Cement is insanely cheap, you'll buy an 80lb bag for about $5 and throw 70lbs of it away, just to strengthen the post mix to something useful. 2- send me your address. I've got a huge box of fiber reinforcement that is added right to the mix. I'll mail you a few pounds, just add it to the mix while you're stirring in the water and it will act like you've added rebar to hold it together. 3- use some wires or something and keep the foam core centered so you don't have uneven thickness. I'm not sure how big of a core you could get, I guess it depends on how hard you plan to drop them and how strong the concrete is. |

I've got a huge box of fiber reinforcement that is added right to the mix. I'll mail you a few pounds, just add it to the mix while you're stirring in the water and it will act like you've added rebar to hold it together. 3- use some wires or something and keep the foam core centered so you don't have uneven thickness. I'm not sure how big of a core you could get, I guess it depends on how hard you plan to drop them and how strong the concrete is. As I get closer to my date I will be in contact. :D I'm also thinking about buying a smaller one that I would do something similar with the foam core. My goal is to get my 5 year old interested in picking things up and putting them down. We've been getting our house ready to sell and move back to OK. She likes hanging with me in the garage and she's at that ripe age where daddy is "strong and cool". |
