There's only four of us left in this thread, right?  We need to get more people involved next year.  Who wants to be a community organizer?

Nice!

Where did that come from?

4.1 miles today. 18 yesterday.

74 miles this week (record high week for me) / 1,308 for the year.

I really wanted to put some daylight between me and the goal.  My brother lives in Akron.  I "ran" down and he drove me home.  We're watching football now.  I had a pack as well with a change of clothes and shoes, a couple liters of water, gun, flashlight, etc.  Plus over 1,000 feet in elevation gain.  So, it wasn't "fast" but it was as fast as I could go.  For all that effort though I'm still at needing 3.7 miles a day for the rest of the year to make it.

Busting out an ultra just for the heck of it... That's pretty awesome. Especially since you were your own support.

What did you do for fuel during the run¿

I ate an egg and a piece of toast before stepping off.  That was it. Skipped dinner too...  I was worried about having to "go" on the trip so I didn't want to eat a lot.  I have some fat reserves to draw from though so I was okay.

That certainly is impressive. Though you might want to look into using Gu or some other type of running fuel when you're going to be out for 90 minutes or more. It helps to keep your blood sugar from tanking.

Keen - Yeah, at the 21 mile mark I was fagged.  Seven more at that point was a little discouraging but at the same time there was light at the end of the tunnel.  It's always just a matter of every step being one step closer to the finish line.

20-22 miles is a very common distance at which runners run out of glycogen (carbs stored in the muscles and liver). When this happens it frequently feels like you just hit a wall and moving forward at any pace can become incredibly difficult. Sometimes people even start hallucinating because their brain is literally starting to function without fuel.

This is why having diverging to eat during long runs/races is important. Usually a mix of simple and complex carbs will provide a good combination of quick and lasting energy.

I had a buddy hit the wall hard at the 22 mile mark during the Dopey Challenge at Disney.  Never seen anything like it.  Didn't know where he was, how far to go, etc.  Looking back it was kinda funny, but he was hurting.  We finished with a lot of walking/running, and was good once we got some real food into him.

I have a buddy who's going to start training for the Dopey Challenge pretty much right after he runs Chicago next week.

The Dopey Challenge was so much fun.  My first marathon ever too.  It was worth the money and training to do it.

I got hurt about a month before hand, and in the 30 days prior to the run, had to take like 18 days off.  Furthest I ran prior to the races was a 10k.  Talk about being nervous.

All went well for me though.  Finished all 4 races with no pain and beat all my goals.
