I am considering purchasing this home gym Smith Machine and I would love your opinions on it.  Thanks.

No, but I will not have anyone to spot me and I would feel more confident going heavy with a Smith Machine. I know that I wouldn't get the benefit of balance, but I can do other exercises with free weights to address that.

Get a power rack with safety bars or learn how to dump a squat. It's not that hard.
In about 7-8 years of lifting I've dumped a heavy squat maybe 2-3 times....it's not something that should happen often.

There is an blog post about a smith machine killing someone because they couldn't  dump it.

Also it's not only about balance but range of motion. You can't move the bar right in a smith.

I think over time we learn what works and doesn't work for working out, and then we start to learn that even though something works, that does't mean it is optimal.  Smith machines may work somewhat for a little while, but if you are serious about making progress over a long period of time and getting strong, they are less optimal.

As has been said, the best would be to find a rack with safety bars, start light and learn correct form, and get after it.

I truly feel sorry for the guys at the gym doing weird stuff on the smith machine, they could get so much more "bang for their time spent working out buck" using a barbell.

ETA the worst injury I ever got was back in the day when I didn't "get it"...I was squatting with the smith machine and jacked my back really bad.  Looking back with what I know now, I can't believe I ever even tried to do it that way.

I am sure the number of people who bought a smith machine and later wished they had put that money towards a power rack is far greater than the number of people who bought a power rack and wished they had put the money towards a smith machine.

The author lost his cousin due to an accident on a smith machine where he was strangled due to a bench press weight that he could not handle.  No spotter. no safety pins.

DO NOT FUCKING BENCH IN A SMITH MACHINE...EVER.

Yep, that's the one I was talking about.

And I would say no one who ever bought a power rack said they would have rather had a smith machine.

Sold mine strictly because of this story. My buddy of course bought  it, but I made it very clear, no benching on the Smith machine! barbell only. I was getting to the point (275 lbs+) that I wasn't comfortable benching without some sort of safety setup. You roll out from 275 once and you understand how quickly you could be gone. Glad I did... Last night decided to try 315 and it went no where. Dropped on the safety bar and I slid out. Friends don't let friends bench in the Smith machine!

Obviously this is a bit more than most need, but keeps me safe.

This. A Smith machine isn't safe as you think. There was a guy here not too long ago that lost a family member to a Smith machine, no joke. Bench press got stuff, couldn't dump the weights due to the tracks and it literally strangled him to death.

I have a power rack and I lift all the time alone. Can't make it, dump the bar onto the rack.

I got mine on Craigslist, full weight set, bar, power rack, and cable accessories for $350.

So easy, even my wife can do it unspotted.

RML-690?   I have one and they ROCK!  Very safe for benching alone.  And for any newbie reading this thread.  NEVER, EVER, collar the the weights on the bar.  If you get stuck then you can dump the bar to the side.  If they are collared you are trapped.

Anyone know where I could find a cage with cables as well so that I could do pull downs and rows?

Looking to stay in the $500 neighborhood.

Meh. Do chins and pull-ups from your new cage. Use your barbell for rows. Cable set ups under $500 are usually pretty crappy.

I got my cage on craigslist and it had the cable thingy already on it. I added the rope and it does good for when you wanna super set and absolutely crush something. I'll do barbell curls and then go to failure with hammer rope curls. Stuff like that. But for strength, everything is barbell. I wouldn't spend a ton extra for the cable accessories but if they're on whatever you find then might add well incorporate them.

Powerline has lat pull attachment that basically doubles the price, but like frayed said, save the money for more weight or a seminar, do chins/pull ups or get some rings, row the bar, etc.

I had this one for about two years, it's a decent starter rack for the $300 range but there is better out there.

Benching is going to be awkward in that setup, the lat pulldown won't let you put the bench all the way in the rack.

I'll admit that I use a Smith Machine similar to the one pictured for two exercises.

Load the bar and do standing calf raises.

Use the pulley for face pulls

That is different then buying it because it is "safer" for benching and squating.  There are a few exersices that can be done on a Smith machine if you also have access to a power rack.  But  to have only the smith machine I think the OP would be better off getting a power cage.

My take on a Smith...if that's all you got, it's better than nothing - just be ready to out grow it's usefulness.

January of last year was when I made the switch to Stronglifts at my 24hr Gym (SNAP)...and had to use the Smith for Squats and Bench.  It was alright, because I started from scratch at 45lbs.  There was several weeks where I did real barbel squats (Dip Station held the bar) but I always benched in the Smith.  Most I benched then was 175lbs 5x5

Now am at a "real" gym, on a 5/3/1 program.  DL 460/SQ 335 PR's in November...bench was only 205lbs at that meet.  I seriously struggle with stability when i get around 200lbs on the bar...and I could blame the Smith for teaching me improper Bench for all those months, and now having to "relearn".

Once upon a time I had a Marcy rack similar to that first one. It was pretty well built but the smith machine was a complete pain in the ass to use and was really not very well made IMO.
I got rid of that and got a rack off craigslist that just happened to have a lat tower attachment. I hardly ever use the lat tower. Occasionally use it for tricep presses with a rope handle. To work lats I do chins and pullups. The cage is sooooo much better and pretty much idiot proof as long as you get your safeties adjusted correctly.

Well, I have been preparing my basement by placing down rubber matting I bough from Tractor Supply Company for the workout area. I'm planning at this point to go with a Powerline PPR200X Cage with the Lat Attachment eventually.

You guys have firmly sold me on the power rack and I'm glad I kept an open mind.

Longer review: It definitely needs to be anchored before I do jack shit with it, but my dad skipped town last week and took his hammer drill with him. :(

I just order yesterday a Powerline Power Rack PPR200x, which has had good reviews online. I didn't get the latch attachment for it, but I will buy that later.

I also purchased an IronMaster Super Bench, which is pretty damn cool. You can get about a million and one attachment for it. I have coming with it the crunch/sit-up attachment and I'll probably get the dip station attachment and definitely the preacher curl attachment for it.

Been using Tractor Supply Plus rubber flooring for the gym floor of my man cave workout room. Should be pretty cool when I get it done.
