Had surgery on my upper back this afternoon. Four weeks before I can get back into the gym. Hit PRs on squat and pull ups this week so I least I'm going out on a high note. Going to be hard not working out for a month. I can start walking after 10-days. Just keep telling myself once I heal I'll be stronger than ever.
eta Demerol isn't going to help my spelling any.

Just remember that once you are cleared hit the lower body and any unaffected limbs the best you can. Also, this is the time to tinker with and modify your diet (go strict as possible). If you have to use the leg curl, leg extension, adducter, abductor, and arm machines for a while to avoid unnecessary strain on the back do so. Machines were originally made for rehab. Use them for this purpose.
Just make sure your surgeon clears you first before starting, and that you are working with a competent physical therapist (PT) that takes a total-body approach. PT's that work with athletes are your best bet. Your surgeon should know an athlete PT to send you to.
