I plan to buy most things of craigslist, so I will be buying it when I find a good deal. I know I need to be on the look out for a power rack, any ones I should avoid? What should I expect to pay for one used on craigslist? I also plan on getting a bench, weights and bar, and I have read about using plywood and horse mats for flooring. Anything else I need? Right now I have my elliptical (I only use it when the weather is to shitty to run in outside), and I can get a bowflex elite from a friends dad for $100. Not sure if it's even worth getting, but I can still work out until I get the rest of my stuff. I'm limited to a car stall in the garage if that matters. Thanks.

Part of it depends on what you plan to do.

I'm just trying to tone up and get stronger. I'm not into body building or anything.

My car stall gym includes:

Adjustable bench for bench press
Squat rack
Barbells - 3 straight bars and 1 curl bar and 600# of plates
Dumbell rack - 5# to 50#
Bench for dumbells
Punching bag
Treadmill

The only things I wish I had in there are a smith machine, a chin up bar, and pulley station.  And possibly a row machine.

I'm in the process of putting mine together.  I already have a treadmill, and a power tower.  I am looking at options for a combination squat/bench rack, and a rack of dumbells.

Rubber flooring too, of course.

For rubber flooring....Tractor Supply Co.

As someone who trolled craigslist for months and found some GREAT bargains.   You have to be patient.

Search keywords like olympic, crossfit, and mis-spelled versions of dumbell and dumbbell and dumbells and dumbbells.

I am in the fitness industry. The truth of the matter is that while intentions maybe good, most gym equipment ends up being used to hang clothes. One reason maybe because you outgrow the equipment you have, or you may find it too hard to workout at home. I see the later the most. Thats why there is so much on craigslist. I am a firm believer, go to work to work, go to the gym to workout, and go home to rest. When you cross those over, it is hard to do any if it.

With that being said....stay away from bowflex. If you can find body solid equipment, it seems to be the best home stuff I have ever seen.

Yeah, but you didn't make the thread.

OP all you need is a range of dumbells, and a bench with a good set of plates. And maybe a squat rack to do bicep curls in.

A quality power rack/cage bolted down
A decent barbell
A quality flat or adustable bench
Olympic weights
A platform (if you plan on doing oly lifts or deadlifts)

edit - home gym porn

add rogue, weight, weights, cybex, bench to that list.  Not always in the sporting section as well, sometimes in the general or beauty and health section.  You get the idea I'm sure.

Bench
Squat rack or cage
Good barbell
300#s of weight to start unless you can do more already. Bumpers are nice.
Some mats.

I am the opposite.  I skip more when I had a gym membership.  With my home gym I can train anytime I want, listen to any music I want, don't have to spend time driving to the gym, don't have to put up with the stupid people at the gym.  I don't have to put up with all the stupid people that work at the gym!

There are thousands and thousands of people that have gym membership that skip all the time.  Gyms like Ballys survive on those memberships so I think your post is somewhat incorrect.  Unmotived people are unmotived whether at a gym or at home.

OP

for equipment AZ15 made a pretty good list.

That's like 10 mins on craigslist for him.

My garage

I like the classic Olympic and barbell lifts so my set-up reflects the simple stuff.

Plywood and horse mat platform
Rogue squat stands with safety arms
Bench I found for free
Bumpers and 2 barbells

Also have a rower I picked up for cheap.

EDIT:  Get what you need for what you plan to do, like was said before, unless you make it a part of your life it only collects dust.

Look into kettllebells, and I'm not talking 25 pounders. I would start with the standard 53 pounds and go up the the 106 pound beast. Lookup dragondoor.com. Best ones on the market.

The reason I am looking to get a home gym is I already donate to 24 hour fitness, but nearest one it 15 miles away and I never have time to go. I currently do kickboxing 5-6 times a week, and just want to add some weights into my routine. It's a lot easier to just go into the garage a lift after the kids go to bed than it is to jump in the car and drive across town.

Any reason to go with a cage vs. a squat rack?

Any opinions on this cage?? From what I read online, it's one of the better cages weider made, but still not the best quality out there. Will it get the job done good enough?

Cage will probably require less footprint, have a pull-up bar and offer more adjustability for safety bars.  You can't even reach depth on some squat racks.  And if you can't reach squat depth, it probably isn't of much help when benching alone either.

Like Tangent and AZ said. Get the cage.
It's safer so you can max out your lifts without killing yours.

I bought one and its the best investment I've made.
It's helping me out tremendously.

I would stay away from Weider branded stuff and any brand that has ever had an infomercial on late night t.v.  Marcy is another one to avoid.

Body Solid, Rogue, Soronex, EliteFTS, Hammer Strength

I prefer a rack because it takes up less room and I'm comfortable with dumping a squat but YMMV.
