Kbros...

How many days rest off of the bicycle is optimal before a century?

Is 5 days too many?  Should I take an easy spin tonight (2 days before century) just to stay loose?

I don't think taking an easy ride will hurt you a bit.

Well, looks like thunderstorms might keep me off the bike tonight.

No big deal either way.  I've completed a century in worse shape than I'm in right now, but was interested in peoples opinions and/or theories.

Cassettes are interchangeable-not sure if SRAM RDs are like Shimano's where 8 to 10 speed RDs are the same with shifter cable pulls per click are different; the next RD up, SRAM's X7 goes for about $40 but it's nominally a 10 speed.

If bevenue has about $220 to spend on his bike, Ribble has a SLX 10 speed groupset (minus brakes) with free shipping which would be a substantial upgrade from X4 level components.

My bike broke yesterday. Don't know what would be an upgrade that would work.

It has a sram X4 rear derailleur that a "B" screw stripped out in. What would be a drop in replacement, but still an upgrade? Bonus if it's Amazon Prime.

  Shimano XT.

ETA: Hell I've got a brand new takeoff XT rear derailleur laying in my parts bin, never seen the dirt...
Shimano wouldn't work with SRAM shifters due to the cable pull ratios.

Ah you're absolutely right. His is an 8-ring cassette anyways; mine's a 10-ring. I'd just replace all that shit anyways.

That is a little more than I'm looking at right now.
I think I got it fixed with a nut but time will tell.

They're mostly "fun rides" at that distance, but it should give you good idea of what to expect as you progress.  Even at 100 miles, there are hundreds who would be doing it just for fun, but you start to see the competitive ones too.  You'll just be able to hang back with the funner crowd and navigate the squirrelier riders as your handling improves.

cool, first time riding in front of the wife/kids..I'd rather not them witness daddy get his lunch eaten by a kid half his age..Its been a great year though..almost 2500mi and I dropped a ton of weight..I figure if I can get my weight into the 160s and get my FTP above 250 by the end of the year I'll be a happy camper

As I build back to strength I am starting to eyeball my first century on 2OCT.

Prior to injury I was doing 35-40 mile rides and did 50+ on gravel ( ) so it gives me something to work back towards.

I am both excited and retarded.

10 miles. 16.4mph/avg

Kept the distance the same but increased the cadence/speed. Speed is a good mph higher than prior to surgery.

Changed out the saddle to a Fi'zi:k Aliante, which I'm sure will make me go at least .87mph faster.

Charging up/changing out batteries to lights and doing a general cleanup of major dirt.

Tried double-wrapping the bars with more tape but it looked like hammered dogshit. I'm such a putz at these sorts of things. The extra bartape ended up on my bike hangers :(

Double-taping your bars is a waste of tape where you don't need it.

If you are double wrapping your bars for extra padding, try this:

Cut a length of bar tape to desired length. Most people want extra padding on the flat part of their bars, so 4-5 inches long should do.   Using double-sided tape, lay that strip on top of your bars (use two strips if you want extra padding thickness).  Now wrap your bars single layer like you normally would.  When done, you'll  have the extra padding where you wanted it.

rode the 30mi Gran fondo on Oklahoma City today..started cramping a little at 22 mi..weird thing is I don't really feel thirsty aside from getting dry lips from all the breathing ...slow down and forced myself to finish a bottle (rode a mile with the bottle in my hand) ..felt better and went on to finish..Learn as you go

First back to back riding days since surgery.

11.4 miles at 15.3/mph average.

New saddle felt ok but will need cream for sure as I was starting to feel it at 10miles.

Also explored some new areas which was fun.

Oh, no!

I took a shot to the ribs a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully nothing broke, but it's been really tender ever since.  It's why I haven't been riding

When I went from BMX to mountain biking I'd play with roadies some and saw it back then.  I would have forgotten about it,  except GD never fails to remind me.

Part of it is the assholes on bikes that ride like idiots.  I also really think part of it is jealousy of people doing something about fitness.

The sad part is I don't think anyone is harder on the idiot cyclists than other cyclists.

On the other hand, you HAVE to push hard to control your little portion of the road or some asshat will run you over and never even know.

I keep thinking of getting jerseys printed up that say "Caution: Rider never carries less than 9mm".  Too much?

I'm just ramping up for my summer riding but I'm going to vent about ANOTHER rider.

Yesterday, I was driving to work in a lower income part of town where many people use old bicycles for transportation.  I was on a major, four-lane street and had a green light where it intersects with a smaller, two-lane street.  My Spidey-Sense was bugging me about that intersection so I paid particularly close attention as I approached it and when I was 1-2 seconds from the intersection, a guy on a bike came flying past the cars at the red light and blasted across the street right in front of me!  If I had gotten to that intersection 1-2 seconds sooner, I would have plowed him over.  No question about it. He was going full speed, didn't even look to the sides and was invisible until he entered the intersection.  I honked and I heard him yell something that might have been an apology or Kiss My Ass.  I couldn't tell for sure but his tone makes me lean more to the latter.

I have a pretty high tolerance for bicyclists in traffic, even those who are blocking traffic, but when a biker's action put me at risk of killing someone......

In all fairness, I see an awful lot of cyclists blowing through red lights here in my area. They want to be respected as equals on the road, by then break traffic laws themselves because they are convinced they are quasi-pedestrians.

On the up side, my wife and I did 7 miles together today on the mountain bikes. We used the bike lane the city put there for us to use.
