I think I became a mountain biker today. I spent a couple of hours at the Indian River Bike Trail today. I had a great time on my first ever real off-road trek. It was surprising challenging. In fact, there was enough "nope" for me to say this place has many areas well beyond my current ability. I can have fun here for a while. I went over the handlebars once, laid the bike down in a corner once, and then just had a large number of white knuckle moments. Good times!

Since I'm forced out of the saddle for a couple more weeks I went to the local bike store to torture myself.

Been thinking through my next bike and was wrestling with two options.
(1) Try to find a cheeper/older roadbike frame and set it up with bigger tires and slowly upgrade components to build a cruiser that could do very light off-road on the myrid of clay/dirt/gravel roads we have.
(2) Try to find a decent-ish hardtail to replace the shitty Wallmart bike I first started out. Again it would give me some limited off-road/gravel abilities and I could hop on for quick neighborhood rides with the kid

Bike clerk heard that I have a Giant Escape II hybrid, that I really enjoy, and suggested I toss some 700x41 off-road tires on it and call it a day. While not "ideal" for a ride up a clay fireroad it would certainly work for the 3x times a year I'd want to do that. I can use the Escape II for family rides, casual days, and days where I want to ride some road/some dirt/clay roads. Have the road bike for long rides and still have the shitty WallMart bike for dorking around the neighborhood with the kid unit.

So while my thoughts would be fun projects and massive money pits, his suggestion cost me $40.

I'm honestly not sure if I am happy or sad right now.

You are sad because you cannot rationalize a new toy. If you have the cash and want it, I say get it. Or...Get Both!

As for me, I worked on getting my balance back over the rear wheel on descents today. In doing so, I also managed my first controlled manual.

Back to back power hours on the road yesterday and today.  Figured if I want to really get back into riding, going to have to eat a light dinner and go out.

Also going to try to get up and leave the house early on Saturday mornings to get in a 2 hour ride, and then 2 to 3 hour Sunday afternoons.

$70 for Niterider's 750 lumen headlight at Bikes Direct right now; great to have in your pocket in case your evening rides go a little longer.

Just make sure to do a tick check when you get home!  VA is terrible for Lyme disease!

When I was recovering from Lyme is when I started riding bike. Lyme was the hardest thing I've had to deal with in my life. That's kind of saying something too. I was at the point where I could hardly walk, talk or see.  It's brutal. Ticks will try to kill ya!

[beer

I already have a Serfas 500 lumen light I got several years ago that I used last night.  That was the first time since I was a kid I rode my bike on the road at night.

Pretty cool, although I was really concerned someone was going to hit me.

Put in another hour tonight. . Legs are starting to feel it, but I am maintaining my average speed, so I guess that's good.

Went back out to the trail yesterday. I have a made a lot of progress from just watching videos online. I was able to bounce over a about a 1foot tall log obstacle in the trail and I made a successful run at a log bulkhead drop off. Minor victories I know, but they were progress for a beginner. No crashes this time. There were a handful of occasions where I ran out of momentum on a steep climb.

Things I remember from starting out:

One of the thing that helped me was doing drills in the back yard.  Started out with a 4x4 and moved up to a piece of log.  Learned wheelies and bunny hops.  At least then I could fall in the grass and not into trees.

Never stare at anything you don't want to hit.

Speed is your friend and your brakes can be your enemy.

That IS a great educational video. I learned a lot watching it. It was hilarious watching the one guy articulate really well while contrasting him with the other guy who could barely get a sentence out. The actual information is great though!

Also, thanks for the tips B-R

Good job on a fat bike!

I took my 29x2s off the other week and threw on the 700x35s....for some strange reason I kind of miss the sound of the knobs!

When I head out to the Whittington Center for the summer, the 29s are going back on. No asphalt there!

This is just a loaner while I am waiting on parts to come in to fix my mtb.

I posted over in the hometown forum, but you guys might have better answers.

We are relocating to Idaho in a month, some of the best mountain biking spots in the world.  In exchange for the move my wife has green lighted a new mountain bike purchase.  I have a hardtail Raleigh that has been great, but aging.

I am looking at full suspension and trying to decide on wheel size.  I won't be doing anything crazy downhill, I am just too old and wise.  Mostly single track.

Recommendations?  Wheel size?

What's really cool is it's old.  It's an early 80's steel Raleigh Competition with down tube friction shifters.

Do you have an LBS you are already dealing with?  If so, what brands do they currently carry?  Are you planning more trail riding or more all mountain or enduro type riding?

Nope, I still have to get moved to the area.  Looks like most of the brands are in the area.

And suggestions from you pros that might keep my from breaking my neck?

Personally, I'd start with finding a good LBS as I'd hate to drop $2K+ on a bike and 5hen find out the shop that is going to warranty it if anything goes wrong are a bunch of jackholes.

That said, I'm 5'10" and my next bike will most likely be a 27.5" Giant Anthem Advanced.  Hopefully this one as there is not much I'd want to upgrade on it for a long, long time.

This is great advice^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^!!!!!  Recovering from injuries at a "mature" age really sucks!

If you're just starting to get out onto some real MTB trails, you'll likely come across a mixture of terrain.  This is definitely an area where you should walk before you run.

Roll the hard stuff.

Pedal through the easy stuff.

If you're descending something fairly steep, always remember to place the majority of your body weight over your rear tire.

Learn the limits of your brakes before you get into a gnarly situation.

You've got a bunch of gears (24? 27?).  Use 'em. Especially when climbing.

Prior to hitting a decent climb, drop a gear or two so that you don't power directly into it and bog halfway through it.

There's so much to learn when it comes to riding off-road.  I advise you to get out there and have some fun doing it!!

First ride not on my trainer since November... Lol.

Top speed was around 37mph... Still realizing I suck at handling skills...

I ride the Boise area. Most of all the shops are really friendly but I have to give props to McU downtown. Super friendly staff and I've gotten some nice discounts from them. They are a Kona dealer and have a variety of new 2016 bikes you can rent (~65$). I'd lean towards the Kona Precept 130 at 2K or the Kona Process 134 at 2900 if your budget will allow it.

On top of South Mountain.

Also did some MTB riding up in Prescott last weekend. By far my favorite place to ride in AZ

Took some soil samples, and luckily my helmet prevented me from any real injuries!!

Nice gear

Love the "...soil sample..." line.  I've turned into a 100% roadie from experiencing so many off-road crashes LOL!

Had a pretty good ride tonight.  First time to go out on this route.

6 Hours of Lake Norman on Saturday.

Wife is out of town on business, so there has been no riding this week.  I REALLY need to get out Thursday and spin a bit to wake the legs up, but I don't see that happening.

I am very tempted to at least sit on a bike tomorrow and, depending on how it goes, possibly go lightly up the street a couple times.

Yep. The weight restrictions and travel ban ended last week. Now it's just "listen to my body" and "go slow".

Glorious weekend to ride...and I'm sick.

I am in the market for a new mountain bike, but am not sure if  I want a 27.5/650b or a 29er.
I am leaning more to the 27.5 I think.

I used to ride a ton but life got in the way...

I have an old Giant Cadex CFM-2 with RoxShox mag-21 forks on it.

I have got a bit larger and the frame on it (18') is pretty cramped and it is no longer comfortable to ride. Plus I am worried my fat ass is going to make the carbon tubes explode. So I figured I would just buy something new.

Visited a few bike shops last weekend. Basically i just need to pick a wheel size and place an order.

That's from what, the mid 90's?  Most of those carbon frames were built like brick shithouses and should be fine.  Any visible damage and I would trash it.

Now if it was one of the old bonded frames with aluminum lugs I wouldn't go anywhere near it.

Yeah it is bonded with aluminum lugs, that is why I don't really want to ride it haha.  One of my buddy's had the same bike and his failed, he had a hard time getting Giant to replace his frame.

The shop I bought mine at is no longer in business so it would be a gigantic pita to get a frame replacement.

New bike day!!

Found this on Facebook, and couldn't pass it up. Specialized Crave SL, 22 pound rigid single speed. Has a few issues that need worked out, but it's an absolute blast to ride!! I'll definitely upgrade the wheels, and I already ordered a new sprocket, chain and cog. Carbon bars, and a carbon seat post should get it close to 20 pounds!!
