With .308 the 168gr FGMM is the standard load for factory accuracy. I have two rifles in .308.
First is a POF 20" the second is a REM 700 LTR. I'm debating having the Rem700 sent off and having the action trued and rebareled in 6.5. Problem is I don't have the option for reloading now or the foreseeable future due to no room or time. Is there a factory load that seems to be "THE" go to load like FGMM? |

Hornady 140gr ELD-M is the answer. Used to be the 140gr Amax until they stopped making it

Yup the Hornady 140 ELD-M load is very good. Had shot the 140 AMAX load since 2008 and still have some but also have the 140 ELD-M and it's very accurate in my two barrels.
OP some advice. Don't go short on the Creedmoor barrel. Stick around 26" and you will get good velocity. Some groups from my 140 ELD-M factory ammo.

Even better. My first Creedmoor was a 28", my second was a 27" and my third a 28". Only went with the 27" as I measured wrong and thought 28 wouldn't fit in my case. It would have but 27" gives good velocity. I only mentioned it as people have gone to going to short barrels and wondering why they can't get 2800+fps. You can always cut it down if you needed but you can't add length to a short barrel.
For contour, go with the M24/40 contour. The MTU is pretty heavy. My first was an MTU and I ran it in PRS matches and it wasn't bad and I had no problems swinging it around and holding it up for positional shooting but some do. The M24/40 is plenty heavy enough. My present 28" is an M24/40 and my 27" is a Med Palma. |

Went out and shot some hornady 140 eld-m ammo today and measured velocities for the first time with my new magnetospeed sporter. I purchased 200rds of lot #3153397. I have a trued rem 700 with a 24" krieger heavy palma contour barrel. My groups (both 3 and 5 shot) were in the 0.5-0.7 MOA range at 100 yds. My avg velocity was 2777 fps. The extreme spread was 172 with a sample standard deviation of 42.35 (sample size of 16 shots through the magnetospeed). I will not be buying this ammo again.

A 172 ES is not the norm. I have never seen that high with any factory ammo in any caliber and never with this ammo. Mine is usually around 30-40ES max. Not handloading low but not bad. The worst I had seen was years back with some Black Hills .308 that was around 100fps ES. Honestly I would check the chrono and run them again.

Not trying to hijack the thread but ... I was getting similar readings with my old competition electronics pro chrono. I thought for sure it was just past it's prime so i bought a new magnetospeed. Other than dropping a bullet from a known height inside a perfect vacuum I'm not sure how I can check the magnetospeed ... I'm definitely open to suggestions though.

I meant check the settings on the chrono. That 172 number is crazy high. Was it done with a clean or fouled bore?

I read the owners manual, followed the instructions and made sure all the measurements with respect to mounting the bayonet were within the specified range. I'm not sure changing the sensitivity is going to help with anything as i'm not getting any error messages. The barrel had approximately 50 rounds through it. Here are the numbers i got. Even if I throw out the highest and the lowest, the ES is still 101 with a SD of 26.

Yeah that is a big spread. No idea if it was shot in a fouled bore with 50 shots through it and the chrono is running. Must be the lot. Did you call Hornady and ask?

My sd was 16 over 5 shots. Was good enough to get me to 1k
Handloads are better for me Sd 5 es 11 for 8 shots 42.6gr imr4451 |
