Hey guys. I just bought a Remington 700 varmit in 308 that I will be slowly building into a precision rifle. Iwas wanting to get some ideas on ammo to use. Before you guys say anything about it. I do reload and will be reloading for this but since I am fairly new to the precision rifle game I would like to start with factory ammo. Most things I have read say that the varmits like 168 grn bullets. I was lookin at PMC xtac match which has 168grn smk's. Other ideas are federal match and black hills. Just wanted to get some ideas. I know as far as learning with a precision rifle the nicer the ammo the more it will help me seeing problems in my shooting, but as always saving a little money never hurts. Thanks for the help guys. Looking forward to some great info!

FGMM 168 has worked well in everything I have ever shot it from.

My MaTen loves the PMC X Tac Sierra 168 load.

PSA has FGMM for 19.99, which is about as cheap as you will find it. Picked up a few boxes tonight.

I always buy fgmm 175gr from PSA, best prices, quick shipping, good cs IME.
My gun loves the 175, shoots bug wholes but make sure you have a twist that can stabilize the 175.
Otherwise look at the 168 gr fgmm

Bump up to the 178 ELD Ammo. My 308 loves them. I reload them now and push them a little faster than Hornady commercial Ammo.

Hornady #8105 is damn fine match ammo, 178 hpbt (.530 BC ) at standard pressure. Shoots clover leafs in many different rifles...

My rifle isn't your rifle, and everyone's will be a bit different in their preference. You'll want to test some of the good stuff though. You'd probably be best looking at offerings that load the SMK, AMAX, new ELD-M.

Black Hills and FGMM are usually excellent places to start.

I really like SSA (Silver State Armory) 175gr match ammo. It produces sub MOA groups out of my Tikka T3 CTR, and can be found as low as $17.99/box on sale.

SSA was purchased by Nosler awhile back. It used to be loaded using 175gr SMK bullets, and now it is loaded with Nosler 175gr CC bullets (obviously) since Nosler purchased them. I've noted absolutely no difference in accuracy between the old SSA and the new stuff.

I'll shoot factory ammo here and there when I don't have time to reload.

In the past, I had excellent results with Black Hills Match .308 as well. The Remington 700 .308 Varmint SF I used to own would shoot 5 shot groups into one ragged hole shooting BHA 168gr match ammo when I did my part. I had to shoot 168gr due to the 1 in 12" twist.

Prime is supposed to be good stuff as well. I like their brass for reloading but never tried their factory load since all mine in handloads.

I had very good groups with 168gr AMAX and TAP ammo in my DPMS LR308. Less than 1/2MOA at 100 yrds. I now have a Ruger RPR in 308 but haven't had a chance to get to the range yet. Maybe Wed or Thru this coming week.

Think about what brass you want to end up with, and don't jack around with any other brass than what you will load for.

In that case, I would only shoot something with Lapua or Winchester brass, with a pretty extreme bias towards Lapua.

The last thing you want to end up with are cases from different manufacturers with different volumes and metallurgy.

Pick one quality case, and shoot ammo to start off with using that case.

I would just hand-load from the start though and not mess around with factory ammo.

Plenty of data on .308 with every target bullet you can imagine in Lapua brass.

PD standard is usually Federal Gold Medal Match 168 grain BTHP.

Some departments are finally getting away from it, looking actually for better bullet performance against projectiles, or better stopping power, but the accuracy standard has pretty much been the Federal.
