I'm looking to put together a rifle that will punch holes in paper at 300-500 yards. That's the limit of my shooting spot.
Budget is about $2000 including glass. I can spend a few hundred more if it will really matter
At some point, I'll want to suppress it.
What do I want to look at?
Remington 700?
Savage 10?
What caliber? 308?
6.5?
I won't be reloading

Give me your wisdom please

My vote is for a tikka t3x in whatever config. you want, depending on your weight preferences.  I like the CTR.  If you're within 500 yards, you may even want to go for .223 to reduce your costs.  For a scope, I hear the vortex viper gen 2's are solid.  Spend the rest of your money on accessories and ammo.

Build a SPR 18'' or 20'' AR.

Quality barrel , bolt, & Optic and you are in business.

Just my 2 cents. And that's about all its worth.

Most calibers will work for 500 and in.  If you'll never go above 500 a 7 or 8 twist 223 will be fine.   75s will get to 500 and still have plenty left in them.  If you want a bigger cartridge i'd get a 6.5 over a 308.

Tikka makes a nicer factory rifle than a Rem or Savage.

Nothing wrong with a R700 SPS Tactical to start with.

But take a look at the Bergara HMR. For that distance, 308 Win is fine but I'd still consider 6.5 Creedmoor. Never know when you'll get the opportunity to stretch your legs a bit. Plenty of good match grade ammo out there. Federal, Hornady, Copper Creek, Prime.

Good luck OP!

The Tikka in 223 is appealing to me as I can use the can I have now.
At 500 yards or less how much does barrel length matter?
20" enough?

Yep that will work, just make sure you get the 8 twist.

Looks like I'm going with a Tikka T3 Tactical in 223.
Found a used one with 3 mags, 1:8 twist, rail and threaded barrel
for $1000

So now I just found a 6.5 Savage for $420 after rebate
https://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/products2.cfm/ID/184267/22338/savage-10-fcp-sr-6.5-creedmoor-bolt-action-rifle-with-fde-stock-and-threaded-barrel

I could build a sub $1000 shooter
Waste of money or not?

Go to a local store and check out any Tikka. They just feel different. Its a big price spread but both rifles will shoot.

I may get both. The Savage seems too cheap to pass up but a 223 Tikka fits what I want to do now.
It's a caliber I already have and I have a 223 can
I don't own anything in 6.5 yet

+1 for the Bergara B-14 HMR in 308 (if you're sure that you aren't going to be shooting beyond about 600 meters).  If you are going to be shooting to 1000 m and beyond, you'll appreciate the 6.5 Creedmoor.

Note that the threading on the tikka tactical is metric. I would be better served by a varmint and getting it threaded 1/2x28.

like what most have to say on here. I just finished my HOWA 6.5 HB action build.
You can get a nice HB action for about 400 bills. Add your own stock, and boom you are all set.

I would go with the Howa action and add your own stock vs the Tikka and having to replace the stock.

They are excellent shooters for your budget.

Good call on the threading. My can is 1/2x28

I think both choices are good, but would go towards the Tikka. Its in 223 which sounds like you already reload for.

You can get the 223 varmints for low $700s.

Howa's do come threaded too BTW
I will have a report on mine this weekend

With  mags, a muzzle brake not seen in this photo and everything to run this gun successfully without going utterly psycho ( which I have done ) this was 2900 bucks including my shooting bag for it.

I know that is a bit more than your budget....but I'll tell you that 60 percent of the money was spent from the rail UPWARD.......and it was worth every penny.  I bet you could build a comparable setup and if you do it just right, you could do this for 2500 bucks and come away a winner.

Bergara HMR.  Available in 6.5C and .308 Win.

What is the opinion of the Burris XTR II 1.5-8x 28mm ?
Comes with the 5.56 Ballistic Illuminated Reticle
Found one for $600
Good enough for a Tikka at 500 yards?

Negative Ghostrider. Why would you want an AR scope on a precision bolt rifle? You will never be able to shoot for groups with that reticle design. Go with something that has FFP as well.
At least check out something along the lines of the Viper PST II 3-15x44 FFP

I have one on my competition rifle and I will tell you the ballistic reticle is geared towards a specific .5.56 round and isn't what one would call a precision scope
for 3-gun its fine but for MOA its not
