Looking at both the Ruger American and the Ruger 77/22- which one is better? What does one offer that the other does not?

Well here is what I think

77/22 (pre threaded receiver) > 77/22 (threaded receiver) > American rim fire

Reasons after having shot all three.
To me the 77/22 (both models) feels smoother and more "full size action" than the RAR
For the moment the 77/22 has more stock options
The pre threaded receiver is as easy as the 10-22 to change the barrel.
Accuracy wise I would give the edge to the 77/22 just because of th aftermarket barrels available

I would recommend handling them both and if it were me I would be hunting a used 77/22 (pre threaded barrel)

The 77/22 is a nicer gun.  As to which one can be made more accurate.....dunno.  I have two 77/22's though and dont have a RAR yet.

I've got a pre-threaded 77/22 and my daughter has a RAR Compact.  The 77/22 is scoped, the RAR has Williams peep sights.  They both really like Eley Club.  Neither is an Anshutz, but they shoot great by my standards (the 77/22 only shoots slightly better than the RAR.)  I like the feel of the 77/22 better.  It's smoother, more refined and has the "big rifle" feel to it.  Looking at just performance, I'm not sure that the 77/22 is worth the extra $$; I could spend less and get a really good shooter.   Of course, YMMV.  I won't spend the money on another 77/22, but I will end up with another RAR that is threaded for a suppressor at some point.

77/22 pre threaded is the nicest but probably not worth the extra money over a RAR.  I bought mine some 20 years ago.  If I were looking today, I would get a RAR, which uses the 10/22 magazines, and call it a day.

77/22 is nice and all, but at 3.5x the price of the American, this really isn't a valid comparison.  Two totally different classes/markets of gun.

Eta-didn't realize this was a necro thread.

I have a Ruger American 22lr with the 18 inch threaded barrel and a Sparrow 22 suppressor.  It is a very accurate set up. Consistently shoots dime size groups with match ammo at 50 yds. if I do my part.  For a cheap rife I am extremely pleased.

You are paying a lot more for the 77/22, none of which goes to making it more accurate. I love mine. Have the 77/22LR, 77/22MAG, 77/17HMR, and 77/22Hornet. The hornet and 17 are VT heavy barrels. All shoot amazingly well.

77/22 is nicer, feels more like a "big" gun. More $$
My Ruger American easily hold 1/2 in or less 5 shot 50yd groups with CCI standard velocity.
Bushnell Ar22 2-7 scope.
If I had unlimited funds or wanted a nicer rifle, 77/22
Utility=Ruger American
The first Ruger American Rimfire went back to the factory for multiple issues.
The replacement is excellent.

What is a pre-thread 77/22 worth these days?  How much more expensive than the threaded version?

Thanks.

How can you tell the difference between a threaded and pre threaded 77/22?

I have a highly customized 77/22 I bought for a song, and a RAR predator model.

I love the American rimfire, it's somewhat sensitive too ammo, or more accurately bad ammo isn't accurate, but with eley target or club is really accurate.

I need to test the 77/22 with better ammo, when I tested it with subsonic,I wasn't impressed but now I suspect the ammo

Take the 77's stock off. If it has a Vblock like a 10/22 holding the barrel to the reciever with 2 bolts it is not threaded and is the older style. If it does not have any bolts holding the barrel to the receiver than the barrel is threaded into the receiver.

Personally the older style might be more desirable because you can change barrels easy but the newer threaded receivers should be more accurate and solid.

I just bought the RAR Compact Threaded after coming across a 77/22 new (or maybe near new with box) for $499.

However, EOD I wanted the compact and I wanted it threaded.   Just to get the 77/22 threaded I am sure would have been north of $100.
