So I have been hunting with a TRS-25 red dot optic which has held up very well but wanted to see if there is anything out there short of NV that you guys are having good luck with. I don't need to reach out any further than about 100 yards but the 3 MOA dot is not great at longer range for the neck shots.

Cheers

I use a Leupold VX-R Patrol 1.25-4X on a rebuilt bushmaster .308 with Troy Alpha rail. Works perfect.

For night hunting I pretty much stick with Aimpoints for their NVG compatibility. Might use a 3x magnifier if I really need it.
For day time stuff my 308 has a Mk4 3.5-10 mil dot and my recce rifle has a NightForce NSX 1-4

If you like the red dot, then buy one with a smaller MOA dot.  Eotech's have 1 MOA center dot, and Aimpoint makes 2 MOA models.  If you're not hunting at night with NV, pick up a low variable powered optic without illumination.    I've read a lot of good things about Leupolds VX Hog model, and they can be found around $200.  Obviously, illuminated models cost more, but not a necessity for daylight hunts

I use a Trijicon TR24r on top of my MWS, and I have no complaints.  For me, it's slightly slower than my T-1 at 1x, which is important to me while hunting saw palmetto groves/swamp.  It can be cranked up to 4x for longer shots, which will be more useful perched in a tree stand at the edge of a field come deer season.   I have successfully used a NV monocular mounted in front of it at 1x as well.

Great thanks I'm thinking about a 1-4  of one flavor or another with an illuminated dot

Ive pressed my aim point pro into pretty good service, I rarely have to shoot under 50 yards though, I'm better than average at stalking game and hogs are generally pretty damn easy to sneak up on, 2moa dot on the head or low chest area and double tap usually does the trick. I definitely plan on upgrading to a 1-4 or 1-6 just for more versatility in the future, but for the time being I don't want to spend that money on optics when I need to just buy more guns haha.

I'm using a primary arms 1-6X.  It has an illuminated reticle that can be turned off or the brightness adjusted for use with NV.  At
1X its very quick for multiple shots on sounders and at 6X I can hold a 3 inch group at 200 yds. Works for me.

1-4 Burris MTAC is working out well for me. The illuminated reticle is nice.

2MOA Aimpoints and a 3X mag on occasion. Also have the Leupold  VX-R HOG which is pretty slick.

They aren't cheap, but my favorite intermediate optic is my 1x4 Meopta K-Dot.

I shoot aimpoints and the transition to the Meopta isn't bad at all. Close to a true 1x for short distance and I can still shoot it with both eyes open.

There's an excellent "roundup" thread in the optics section for the low power variable scopes.

Found it - Here is 30 pages worth of analysis of the offerings.

My thoughts would be a little different if u don't want to spend $ on an acog. I'd vote to get a scope with good low light glass and a 50 mm or more objective lens like a 3-9x50 and just use it on 3-4 power (larger objective lenses can usually take in more light than smaller lenses if all other variables are the same).  You should be able to make shots at night with a half moon or so and could also use it as a day scope.

greenhornet-1,
love it,  my shots are all under 100 yds, most less than 50 yds
but after the first shot its shooting at running pigs and the low power settings
with the horseshoe recticle works for me

the scope was cheap too, that helped

I'm a big fan of primary arms fwiw.  Very high quality products for the price. The guys that run the store know their stuff.
