Hi Guys,,,,

I've seen coyotes here north of the Adirondack Park on several occasions.  And hear them behind my house quite often.  And I see evidence of coyote predation on deer at my hunt camp..

Well, I finally got to even the score a little bit.  I was stalking deer, came up on a doe, and saw a coyote creeping up on the doe.  I was not interested in taking the doe, but had no qualms at all about busting the damned coyote.  roughly 50-55 yards with a 280 Ackley Improved, pushing a 7mm 160 grn Nosler Partition at a chronographed average speed of 3003 fps.  While its only a sample size of one, I can say with some confidence that this load positively flattens coyote! Classic BOOOOMflop.

I have no frame of reference.  This bugger is sized like a small to modest german shepherd.  What is 'average' and what is "big' for northeastern coyote???  anyone got a length or weight ?

Look up CoyWolves.... There is a hybrid moving into the northeast from what I read. You'll probably be seeing them soon enough.

Avg size for a NYS yote ranges from 35-45lbs. Obviously males can be larger then females.
There are some 50+lbers that have been taken and I have heard of some into the low 60's.

And they always look bigger than they are.
Unless they are REALLY big, heehee.

Did you measure and weigh yours?

I've seen them from anywhere in the 30lb range all they way up to 50lb range.  The larger ones were ones I shot when living in Northern Nevada and they were eating well.  Mostly I see them on the lower end around 35-40ish tops.  I used to carry an old bathroom scale years ago but now I don't bother with skinning them or weighing.  Not worth anything so i'm not going to spend my time skinning them.

I've shot them with 7mm Rem Mag, 280AI, 25-06, 300 Win Mag, 243, 22LR, .204 Ruger, and of course 223.
