I decided on a whim to take my .300 afield today. I was eager to try out a new hand load and the opportunity presented itself. I did my usual stalk, walking the field roads right at dusk and got lucky. First shot was on a little cottontail. The shot was at about 50 yards and the the 125 grain SMK just lanced right through. Second shot was on a nice sized jack and did some pretty severe damage, also at about 50 yards. Both bunnies were DRT, with only the cottontail giving more than a twitch. Load used was 125 Sierra Match King over 17.5 grains H110 @ 2200 fps.  Rifle is my home brew CMMG/Armalite/Daniel Defense mutt (el matacoñejo) topped with a Primary Arms 1-4x.
I don't think I can recommend the .300 for varmints but it was an interesting experiment. If I can ever get my hands on the 110 grain VMax's I may try them as well.  I have some loads for the Sierra 125 Game Pro and 110 Varminter on stand by, just waiting on the time to try them out.

my .300 blackout is the go to jack rabbit gun!
have had very mixed results with the 125 match kings when it cam to expanding.
one soaked up a hit and shot off leading to a 20 min chase to put him down
next one was a hit just above the shoulders, head almost took clean off
switched to 125 grain nosler ballistic tips and have had very good luck!
great pics and thanks for sharing

I used my 10.2 300 BLK on some jacks with Remington 125 gr OTM factory ammo.  It was devistating.  Many rabbits had parts hanging out.  One took the bullet in the chest and was DRT with no Exit wound.  That was a lot of energy that was absorbed.

I've shot 50+ jackrabbits with my .22 hornet this year using 34 grain varmint nightmares over 12 grains H110 for 2900 fps. The jack that I nailed with the SMK above had about the same level of damage and stopped just as fast (instantly).  I have some of the Sierra 110 grain Varmint JHP's. When I have a chance I plan on loading up some of those and giving the jacks something to really worry about.

I've found the 125 and 150 nosler ballistic tips (silvertips too) to be extreme overkill for rabbits. At least they are if u intend to cook the rabbit.

This picture offends me.

I cannot believe that you would shoot a rabbit with a large caliber and blow it all over the place just for fun and then not put the rifle in the photo.
